I haven't played a full game yet, just fooled around with the dynamics a bit. I'm going to wait for 1.5.1 (or 1.5.2) before investing too much time into it, because it sounds like there are some balance issues that need to be worked out.

Enjoying a lot of what the expansion has offered, for example, the addition of alt-history paths for some nations has made the game more unpredictable but more logical in how things happen, there is more variety to the war. Changes to airplanes and how they attach to armies is awesome. However, I feel that the new command system need some work, it is a cool feature, but it can be annoying trying to "customize" your fronts, XP is wonky and punishes you for being good. The only real black mark on this expansion is that it feels they didn't take enough time to make sure there is nothing weird going on with some of the focus trees if Germany or Japan go ahistorical, England should not engage the anti-communist German alliance because one country in that alliance has an extra percent of communist support while that specific country is waging total war against USSR. The US seems to stay out of world affairs in none-historical games as its blocked from progressing in the focus tree.

So all in all, I love the new expansion, but it seems not enough QA was done to ensure there are no glaring problems. We can and should forgive problems that are not apparent at all unless extensive and prolonged checking is done, but some of the problems in this expansion seem to be born out of carelessness.

Features and tweaks: are very good. And can see scope for them to improve and be added upon.

AI improvement- very welcome but like a Paulus breakout attempt do not go nearly far enough.

Also Battle Planner still frustrating. Cant mass tanks or special units in appropriate provinces without AI spread. Maybe even more frustrating now, but early days and still learning it.

edited: this is what I'm perceiving, could be wrong

1.Waking Tiger features were welcomed by many in DDs and this DLC is clearly the best by far.
2. Seems to be less numerous positive feedback on the forum than I've seen for lesser DLCs

3. Hmm are many feeling the AI improvements didn't go far enough and it's jading the response.

New Command Structure, whilst I like the improvements, I don't like how fiddley it is to organise sometimes, it's a bit messy could be refined more. I also don't like you can buy traits, should be earned and not bought.

The historical insignia's is a let down, oh wow you get 5 to choose from! The Field Marshal ones are horrible imo.

Other than that I'm not sure everything seems okay. I'm a bit upset there was only 3 new tracks added for Waking the Tiger but I do realise these take ages to compose and record, mix and master. I would have liked more Far-Eastern music added to the game.

I'm not sure how exactly those new command orders work, you know the Force Attack and Last Stand ones? Might need to watch some videos before I try it.

I loved the changes they made generally- Chain of Command could use some work.

But I'm extremely annoyed that they barely playtested the game, and you can tell they didn't. They add all these focus trees and clearly did not play through as any of the nations to the end of the game. Many Chinese games are either riddled with bugs or just ruined by oversights(like Japan re-declaring war after losing Korea and being forced to white peace)

It's absolutely pathetic, if I'm being honest. I was hoping this would be better than DoD, but it's the same buggy crap- but with better content.

They also broke MP with constant desyncs, then claimed they tested it on release day? What a load of BS- because you can tell they were playing on a LAN if that was the case. Much harder to desync when playing on the same network.

The DLC and patch is not ready for release. I dont know why they released this, at this stage. It is a Beta which have to be tested and changed! It the worse preformance which I have seen in HOI4. I don't get it why they decreased the quality of the game! ... Some elements are good but some are realy bad. I mean why do we need a decission system where I cant see whats gonig on? The same effects could be implementet with the working and clear mechanics of the focustree. Why we need two systems? They build such a good game and now this!!! WTF is happaning in stockolm ?? was the winter to hard?? than wait for summer when you canot develop in winter!! This is a mess.

3. Hmm are many feeling the AI improvements didn't go far enough and it's jading the response.

You hit the nail on the head at least for me. Based on all the comments on this forum, I expected enormous AI progress. The only thing I've found to be fixed is that the UK AI garrisons the English ports making Sea Lion a bit of a challenge. Most of the other AI issues have not been fixed and it seems new ones have been introduced such as France's even worse behavior than in 1.4.2. Also, new bugs like Italy taking all of occupied France for some reason.

If you're in a hole, stop digging. In the case of Hoi4, if the AI is broken, stop adding new features that the AI can't handle until you fix it.

The new focuses and features are nice, but I miss assigning a field marshal to the 100 plus divisions which I have on reserve in garrison and the 1943 lag being present in 1936 is disturbing.

I like it a lot. Especially the chain of command, attaching CAS to armies, real division names and the new army insignias.

Good work, Paradox!

The same issue I had with previous dlc like France not properly interacting with the Polish, Romanian, and Czechoslovakia alliance except now its the Chinese warlords switching who they are a puppet of.

I enjoy the game but this issue happening again is just frustrating

I was only playing PRC two times now and it feels like the AI is in a much better shape now. I am actually pretty impressed. It seems to be much more difficult to win against it. At least for me.

The border conflict mechanic is not good/ not enjoyable IMO.

All in all I am super happy with the update and dlc so far.

You can still do that. There is nothing that prevents you from adding 5 x 24 divisions to a Field Marshal.

And there is overall improvements to performance. Maybe you are running too many background applications you are not aware of or something?

I used to enjoy playing China in single player. It was fun to hold off Japan and then face the challenge of invading their mainland. The new AI makes this even better.

What I really don't like is that where I used to automatically get all the Warlords' lands, I now have them as puppets. I think this was a design mistake. Its just border gore, and dealing with the AI puppets is annoying.

I also don't like that special forces and tanks are now less effective. It used to be that you could play as a small nation, and build a quality force to take on the bigger countries. Now, defense is too strong, and the bigger country usually wins. This makes even attempting to play as the Warlords, a major 'feature' of the DLC, somewhat pointless...

There are also some weird things happening when playing as Nationalist China, for example PRC declaring war on me when we are both still at war with Japan, and then PRC joining Comintern and calling in the Soviet Union on the side of Japan!

Even though PRC and China had the plain old boring focus tree in the old 1.4 version, at least the conflict was pretty clear cut and historical. Now, the whole theatre is a bit of a mess...

I know some people liked to play for days, going until 1945-1950. But I liked to play for a few hours after work on normal difficulty, maybe for about 4 hours, and try out a new strategy on a different country. Fighting just seems to take so long now, my enjoyment has reduced in single player a bit.

I also don't like having to use Generals with 24 divisions. Its really finnicky assigning divisions one by one to them. I don't like using the battleplanner all the time because the AI will put my troops in areas I wouldn't - areas without supply, or put my tanks up against enemies defending mountains for example.

I really like the new mechanics, but the new ahistorical paths are frustrating at best. Especially Germany. I tried democratic Germany two times (historical focus on). Both times France went fascist, got a civil war, lost the civil war and stayed democratic.

Even though PRC and China had the plain old boring focus tree in the old 1.4 version, at least the conflict was pretty clear cut and historical. Now, the whole theatre is a bit of a mess...

Yes that's right, it sometimes can get really messy. For example, I ended up in a war with the allies because I stepped on mongolian territory while fighting Japan??? Or the "owner" of China changed from Nationalist China to Guangxi Clique to Yunnan in a few month. I don't get what was happening there. So this stuff needs more love from the devs.

The new command structure and border conflict mechanic is a nice addition on paper, but both are broken at the moment.

I still don't get why battle planner decides to draw frotn lines against an opponent which I'm not at war with. It just messes the whole Field Marshall front line and leads to idiotic shuffling around (=draws all of your armies front lines on top of each other, instead of dividing the front into sectors like it should).

Edit:
The garrison mechanic is also broken now:
if you put a garrison order on an area you're not in full control of, they'll start attacking inland, even if they were put on port garrison, no matter if you controll all the ports in the said area. Had 12 divisions as Guanxhi on that order to guard 5 ports, but half of them decided to attack Japan in the mountains around one port. Japan naval invaded and I lost two ports due to them being garrisoned by only one weak division.

Great potential and I like the content, but it's definitely not polished right now. The frontline AI is in such a state that I think I'll stick to playing minors with at most 100 divisions to micro around. For now.
I do commend the boldness of the changes, though.
