My one is the trade league due to the trade policy which gives you consumer goods and unity straight after the league was founded, the other bonuses are nice but not game-changing.
The research ccoperative finisher with the additional megastructure build capacity is nice too but at the time you can get to level 5 the game is pretty much over

I'm almost always a one-planet Ecumenopolis Megacorp and always a trade league, though I have my federations fall apart recently, as soon as I start to dominate it and refuse suggestions to change laws... So TBH I find federation membership very unstable in Lem :/

I always wanted to try Hegemony, I like the idea of it.

In fact, I'm planning to do a "alone in the galaxy" human run, release colonies as vassals and establish a hegemony. A little RP on how the galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man came to be.

Maybe I even take evolutionary mastery and create human sub-races with different humanoid appearances. Dwarves for "heavy grav" worlds, Elves, etc... Ogre mutant slaves... Plenty of opportunity for a fun RP session

In SP My favourite is probably the Hegemony. Making allies into discount vassals is nice and having more power over the AIs in it is nice. The Boni you get out of it are good by themselves already do that puts it in number one spot.

In MP since people are a lot less willing to join a Hegemony I prefer the research cooperative. Research buffs are always nice and unless you have an AI I feel like a federation fleet is rarely being built, so having this later isn't as bad.

Trade League by far offers the most significant bonus if leveraged. It offers a massive amount of unity.

The other feds don't really do much.

Not to mention, a Trade League works well outside of mechanics as well. An org dedicated to international free trade fits the flavor of my empires very well.

i still have not figured out what i like the most, cause i play fanatic egalitarian with utopian abundance. recently i've been thinking trade league would actually go well with utopian abundance. but i usually go tech federation. what about the military federation? does no one take that? it seems to give lots of fleet benefits, more than any other.

Depending on empire im playing right now.
Hive is going to research coop, tho for some weird reasons they cant form research federation, so unless anyone forms that earlier i go without federation.
Spiritualists go for trade league but only because there is no federation for peacefull spiritualists, and default federation is better when is not existing.

Hegemony and trade league. You can basically turn a Trade League into a hegemony. It just takes longer.

For me it's Trade League when doing a trade focused empire and otherwise it's either Hegemony or Galactic Union because they both reduce the impact of ethics conflict on cohesion.

I'm almost always a one-planet Ecumenopolis Megacorp and always a trade league, though I have my federations fall apart recently, as soon as I start to dominate it and refuse suggestions to change laws... So TBH I find federation membership very unstable in Lem :/

The issue is that you can't establish federations with vassals, so you'd have to give your vassals independence first. Well, at least a few of them at any rate. Once you have your federation up and running you can kick out all non-vassals and proceed to turn them into vassals while still maintaining the federation.

You might want to give the Human Diaspora mod a try: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2539574709 I never got around to trying it for myself, so no promises how it will turn out, but in principle it seems to fit your intended RP extremely well.

Hegemony by far. I'd go for the science one as second, but unless you somehow start with it (perhaps a new origin?), it will take the whole game to reach max level.

Other than those, trade league comes third.
