What is your army doing when it isn't in battle?

I don't think I've seen anything about this in the DDs.
Does your army just magically appear when you go to the battle map or is it with you (like a D&D style party) when traversing the world map?
If its with you do its members interact with you and the world as you travel?
If I'm an elf with an army of troll berserkers I'd expect the gate guards of a human village to be a little suspicious of me.

As long as the problems aren't as badly obvious as in Mass Effect - "We've improved Citadel security against Geth attacks." *Shepard appears with Legion in tow* "Welcome to the Citadel, have a nice stay." ^^

Or Skyrim if you play as Khajiit... Khajiit were not allowed to move free in cities... But you as player... They don't have problems to let you in.

It's called "suspension of disbelief". Just like you can't expect the game to not allow you to get into a weapon seller because you're a giant and don't fit in the store. Just imagine the army is camped outside, or hunting, doing errands, etc. When you're on the map you only see yourself, the army is implicitly there, they're playing dice, practicing, foraging, etc. you just don't see it on the screen.

But its the job of the game to help make suspension of disbelief possible. I don't expect the army members to all be fully detailed NPCs with their own personalities and stories etc but if they're totally ignored and just magically appear when a fight begins its harder.

The world map is a world map. The cities are smaller then the character. The army didn't magicaly appeare... You just don't see them on the abstracted world map. Battle maps are then more scaled maps. Look at the screens, this aren't 1:1 maps.

Why would it react? It's not the real world in the game, not even the scandinavian medieval world. It's a fantasy world inspired by Norse mythology. For all we know it's common in that world to see warlords with their small mercenary armies go around the place.

One of the troll factions are

Maneaters who see mankind as prey and will eat humans if given the chance.

I think if I was a human I'd want to know who this group of trolls wandering around near my home are and why they are there.

Presumably your trolls are disciplined enough not to eat humans unless you allow/order them to do so. Now, the way the faction reputation system works means you'll probably have been troll-aligned (and thus likely anti-human) when you recruited those trolls, but once you recruited them they presumably do their best to keep a low profile in foreign territory. After all, it's not like the average farmer is going to stop to take a good look at any army; farmers tend to avoid armies, even their own, because they are violent and destructive.

Some quests, events, decisions, or effects on other parts of gameplay based on unit composition would be pretty cool! I'm sure we'll see at least some stuff like morale effects from mixing troop types if they don't get along, at least.

The way the caravan follows you in Banner Saga was cool. Awesome game by the way, if you have not heard of it. The combat is unique but perhaps not for everyone, and the storyline is amazing. Definitely a nordic mythology inspired world. The basic premise is that the Gods are dead, and the world is dying. Sounds familiar?

But yeah, maybe Runemaster could possibly also have a 'caravan' like that following you around. I think it could be made to work.

I loved everything but the combat. I stopped at some point because it became too repetitive. This game would be gold if it would copy KOTOR combat.

Combat was one of my favorite parts of that game. Action combat just don't fit in my opinion. Banner Saga was one of the few games where I just put difficulty on max for fun.

Wenching for fun and profit! Helping rescue lost kittens and corralling fat cows. Maybe even building habitat for midgardr. Hopefully mentoring and training warriors. They might also kill that one braggart who keeps claiming he totally dated Freya in high school.
