Your main problem is that it may be quite hard to recover from this situation, but until you gain either more equipment or your division templates are upgraded and fully reinforced, hold a defensive position on a river or some other form of defensive terrain. Pull back your least equipped divisions so that the fully equipped one's will take priority in defense because the aforementioned combat width mechanic applies defensively as well.
