Like the label on the tin says I would like your opinions on which mp map is the most fair in terms of the starting position of the host and the other player. I would also appreciate it if you would include your reasons for your assessment. Thx =)

I judged Plateau Valley as the best Multi-player Arena Map after I performed some extensive testing on it prior to choosing it as the Arena Map for Valhalla's Tournament of Champions.

After more than 1700-hours in the BattleTech Beta I was very familiar with many, many corners of the Initial load of maps. Then at Launch I tested out the new maps and in time came to the decision that Plateau Valley was to me, the best Multi-player Arena Map in BATTLETECH.

Plateau Valley is a relatively compact map, with both players near to the map's edges and a significant piece of high ground separating them.

Like in the UFC, there is a material advantage to the player who advances into the center of the map ~ Elevation and potentiall its bonus "to hit."

While there are lines of cliff-faces on Plateau Valley, they largely serve to channelize movement while not effecting Line of Sight, something I found to be a surprisingly pleasant and pleasing tactical nuance.

Plateau Valley has none of the Extremely Restrictive Terrain that other Maps have proven to hold. While Jump Jets offer a marked and valuable advantage for the tonnage they cost and Heat they produce, Plateau Valley does not offer Jump-capable Mechs veritable #SanctuaryGround like BATTLETECH's Dessert Map withis it's High Mesa and attendant low ground.

All in all, I found Plateau Valley to be the best Arena Map from among BATTLETECH's Launch selection of Maps.

While I hope HBS_CaptKerberos and Team HBS may one day provide true Solaris VII Gaming Arenas, until such a time as that might happen, Plateau Valley is my selection as Best Arena Map in BATTLETECH. : )

Plateau Valley is the best Heat Neutral map for multiplayer. It’s not perfect but given the options available @Prussian Havoc chose wisely.

If heat neutral is not a factor the Martian biome map is very challenging and offers a very equal placement for both players.

The rest need a serious amount of reworking for them to be asymmetrical yet balanced for competitive multiplayer.

That said, I expect clan mechs to be in the game before any changes to multiplayer maps will take place.

Stacks has two significant issues.

1) it's small.
2) Player two has access to the water immediately while player one has to charge to get to it. So Player Two can park his hot mechs in the water and wait, because it's a small map and fire without concern for heat. Meanwhile Player one, even if using the same tactic, has to deal with heat.

Player one can avoid this tactic by... Not playing. Just walking back and waiting for his opponent to come out of the water. Not good map design for multiplayer.

Double the size of the map and make it equidistant to water for both players, and it's better.

The water is low and surrounded by nice cliffs that player one can take advantage of to massacre player 2 if player 2 just charges straight into the water. Height difference makes a huge impact on who benefits from the first 3-4 rounds of volleys. Besides which, unless your mech is insanely hot, the proper play pattern is to start heating up and *then* go into the water. Not to mention the fact that it turns off a lot of direct LoS weapons. Stacks is small, but I don't consider that a big problem.

What is the most fair MP map?

One purpose-built by HBS to emphasis fair MP gameplay, or at least starting locations.

The see HBS’ “take” on the Solars 7 Steiner Arena has long been a hope of mine.

Such an emphasis on symmetry should make for all the fairness in starting location I could hoe for in BATTLETECH Multi-Player. : )
