No not really, I'll do what I do with most Paradox games, play the weakest great power that has to also face all aspects of the game. In EU that is Portugal, in Vicky that is Austria-Hungary, and in HoI that is Italy. Doing so requires you to look at everything the game requires but with a harsh task master that swiftly and painfully corrects any mistakes. My strategy will be to reform the Roman Empire, make the Mediterranean a Mare Nostrum, support Germany, surrender by 1943, and then have my son-in-law executed... wait, this isn't CK. Never mind on the last one.

One alternative to Italy I've been considering is:

• play Sweden
• Build up a navy/air force capable of holding its own in the Baltic ocean
  
• go Fascist, ally Germany
• Claim and conquer Denmark (historical enemies of Sweden, need to be subjugated)
• Claim and conquer Norway (it's like West Sweden tbh)
• Reclaim the poor peasants of Finland (it's a rightful colony)
• Reclaim the poor peasants of Estonia (they need to be sheltered from the menace of Communism!)
• Fortify and build up defenses until war with the USSR
• Ship troops to Estonia and Finland for an offensive push
  
• Pincer attack Leningrad CARL GUSTAF GRAD
• Rejoice as there's no Left left

Probably I'll do this one after my first game as Italy.

I'm going to play italy first in MP and SP.
But will also start up GB and France to see what kinds of events they get when Germany does it's Anshluss etc. and what the effects are.

I'm gonna play National Spain. After winning the civil war i'll join the Axis forces, and when war breaks out Gibraltar will swiftly be taken back, while also helping on the french front. After France's fall divert my forces towards helping Italy reach Suez. After we do that, the Axis will dominate the Mediterranean, and soon the last Allied bastions (fx. Malta and Cyprus) will fall.
After this my main priority will be to provide naval strength and fence off any allied invasion of North Africa or Normandy. If i got any leftover ressources i will also help Germany in Russia.

Soviet Union, i want to conquer Finland once and for all to relieve my northern flank and when Barbarossa comes i will leave gaps in my lines to goad the AI into attacking and to test it's resilience. For the most part I will keep a static line along the Daugava-Dnieper or Daugava-Berezina-Dnieper-Southern Bug.

most likely first game will be duo Germany, how I ended my HOI3 campaign, 2 players, 1 country but 2 fronts...
for single player might look into a Japan game or try Finland and grab entire nordic... use rivers and forts to keep USSR out and befriend SWE to have extra troops before invading them later

I'll probably not get invaded myself so shouldn't have to worry too much about that and having such a large IC should allow me to play around the game and learn things without messing up (hopefully) too badly. After that I'll probably go Japanese or German, I enjoy being the aggressor.

I will probably play Italy or Japan as my first country a couple of times just to get used to warfare as early as possible. Most likely Japan as I have always been a bit tempted to form an Asian colony in Europe and along the Pacific coastline of America... After that, I will probably try one of the Nordic countries and see what can be done to stop Soviet and German invasions.

Someone has probably already said my idea... but whatever.

I'd play as Turkey and choose a Fascist dude as my first Minister, while pursuing the Collectivist National Focuses so as to quickly become Fascist. Afterwords I would go down the General Improvements Tree about Infrastructure/Industry so as to modernize Turkey. Later join the Axis, take Iraq, Syria, Palestine, maybe even get Greece before Italy does and see how far I get. After that I'm probably screwed with the Russians to the North, but hey maybe I can push and get to Baku and strangle Soviet industry to death (although they don't really need oil for just straight up infantry... meh).

Army based on Infantry, Artillery, and Anti Tanks against the Soviets. Light/Medium Tanks (Panzers as well as Turkish Tanks probably) and Motorized infantry in Africa and the Middle East. Air force of mostly Fighters, probably won't have the industry for anything else. Navy of subs and destroyers to attack British shipping in the Mediterranean, I'll let the Italians handle the surface fleets.
