Why can't I completely hide ALL GUI elements?

When I press "Hide Hud" I still see the x-ray of my units unless I switch to enemy view, and then I can only see what they see. In Red Dragon, this problem did not exist.

This game is absolutely beautiful in so many ways. Why can I not just ogle it without stupid HUD elements?
