Due to my personal RP I use full BB fleets, Trantor's style, as soon as I get them and when it's time to start preparating for a FE invasion I build a screen of torpedoes corvettes wich I love to see as space kamikaze. Pretty sure that this fleet composition would be destroyed in multiplayer games but I don't play it.

So my answer to your question would be : Don't care about optimisation in Solo games, play the weapon that you like the more and crush AI all the same.


EDit : Full BB fleets are still better than everything in a 30 day battle due to their strong alpha strike wich perfectly fits with my hit&run playstyle.

People seem to be overlooking torpedoes.

They're extremely niche, but very effective at their role so they're in a good spot. Torpedoes can really wreck faces in the right circumstances. Also, strike craft have served me very well. If you compliment your fleet with some carrier class Cruisers, it helps out alot. I don't seem to see that much Point Defense from the AI.

I will agree about missiles, however. Sadly, they're just not very good.

I heavily favor torpedoes right now. I'll tend to enter combat with one fleet comprised entirely of torpedo corvettes with disruptors and energy torpedoes, which strip enemy fleets of shields very quickly. I follow with a fleet of all plasma/tachyon weapons of various sizes to melt through their armor. I'll emergency evac the shield-killer fleet as soon as I can, and try to get them an admiral with trickster to maximize this tactic.

I think it is. Might be i simply forgot to swap out that one piece of armor for an extra reactor so i could upgrade them. I shall check this evening why i did that.

Was power usage, couldn't put tier 5 shields on.

Okay, I tested your fleet against two different fleets of mine. As your fleet came to 640 fleet limit, I used an equivalent size fleet.

First was all cruiser, type 52 cruiser (5 shields, 2 plasma, 2KA). Second was all battleships, type 422 (4 shield, 2 plasma, 2KA, 2 shield capacitors) but I didn't test battleships at close range.

Cruisers and battleship fleets won every single engagement, even when right next to the other fleet. Strategic resources used: lythuric gas, garanthium ore, teldar crystals. Therefore, shields received +15% hit points, +10% hull points, +10% kinetic weapons damage.
Interesting to note how they fared, given that the cruisers and battleships were only using shields against your kinetic oriented fleet. Your corvettes didn't act as an evasion screen, your battleships and cruisers were destroyed first, then destroyers and finally corvettes.

Maximum casualties that the cruisers suffered was 53/160 when starting from close range.
Maximum casualties that the battleships sustained was 29/80.

well... i'm both suprised and not...
I'm suprised how bad my fleet did.
But on the other hand i'm not suprised seeing the corvettes should be acting as a screen, but didn't...
I alo notice that in all engagements the bombers/fighters did nothing, wich is even more bafeling to me

Would it make a difference is you took teh same comosition as ships, just different loadout?
(so 60 corvettes, 50 destroyers, 40 cruisers and 40 battleships)

BBs and cruisers are the first to get blown up in these tests. I noticed most of the casualties I suffered were BEFORE your cruisers and BBs were destroyed, so your destroyers and corvettes were just sort of paperweights.

Just looked...this is not the case. If they're not targeted...even at range...it makes no sense using them whatsoever

I guess the question becomes whether or not you can load enough damage onto corvettes to give them any sort of niche, but previous testing seems to conclusively indicate NO at the end game...midgame i assume no, early game you have no other options...so

i assume it is because of the amount of evasion on the corvettes. Perhaps running a torpedo corvette or one with swarmer missiles and all the utility slots filled with power only might be something to attempt.

At that point, however, they become little more than large bombers/fighters and we know those don't fare well.

Fighters/bombers dont fare well because they get picked off easily. Corvettes with high evasion would not be easily picked off...don't know if that test has been done

I have a theory, with some limited testing to bear it out, that mining lasers are actually one of the best weapons to run on corvettes. While their damage is less than a plasma cannon, they have 100% armour penetration and no shield damage penalty, so they're really efficient at cutting straight through to direct hull damage. It's less DPS per ship, but they're also cheaper than plasma cannon builds and with corvettes quantity is quality.

What about the Focused arc emitter vs lance?
every time ive tried swapping to lance from the arc emitter, ive ended up losing fights that the arc emitter has no issue with.
Arc Emitters thing is "no Defense". Evasion? Armor? Shields? All Skipped 100%.
That makes it the most versatile XL weapon. And the only one being able to hit Corvettes reliably.
However the rule of weapons balance dictates that this versatility must come at a inferiority compared to specialised XL weapons.

What sort of fights are you referring to? Need to be really specific.

Fighters/bombers dont fare well because they get picked off easily. Corvettes with high evasion would not be easily picked off...don't know if that test has been done

The corvettes in the mixed fleet had 80.4% evasion, but they didn't really inflict much damage and weren't too hard to destroy, especially for the cruisers.

how does this fare vs the above fit?

Against the battleship and cruiser fleets, or the mixed one?

sorry for delayed reply, been rather ill.

mainly against scourge, and fallen empires.
against scourge same size 55k fleet, i lost 1k fleet strength and destroyed his.

i wouldnt mind seeing both fleet types. is there a post that shows how i can test these my self? as i would be happy to if i knew how to :)
