Has anyone played with a nation that gives yearly papal influence? That sounds like the weakest possible bonus.

Yes I have. Extra cardinals and later in game permanent papal controller is nice.

So it really works out like that? Since the highest one (+5 from Papal ideas) is only equal to a single Cathedral, I didn't think it would actually give you much of an edge over a France sized or even Portugal sized country. Haven't played a Catholic since before 1.2, though.

It's not a huge bonus, but every little bit counts. -5% tech rate doesn't add up to much, and people would still say that's one of the best ideas.

I dont count being able to go plutocratic as a benefit-remember, these are only about the ideas, not the nations! Anyone can go plutocratic!

Nepal indeed has some mighty ideas. They do hew very closely to Prussian ideas though as said, and I'd have to say the Prussian ideas beat them out a bit. Bonus points for having a godamn lion on the flag though!

Does that make Prussia the best one though? Their ideas are certainly pretty great for raw combat, but there's more to the game than murdering other pixels.

Ivan's hundred is indeed insaaane, but is it better than other republican tradition idea groups? Dont forget that the Irish also get +1 republican tradition-maybe they've got some power?

Personally I'm a big fan of the Prussian idea set, though the Russian one is good as well. Those would probably be my top 2, in order. Havn't had enough experience playing republics to really judge the value of +RT though. While there IS more to the game that murdering other pixels, most of the other things are (or at least can be) used to put you in a better position to murder pixels, via having to deal with fewer revolts, or getting more money to be spent on mercs or stuff.

Assuming singleplayer, most of the bonuses mentioned here are quite useless. You don't need any military or economical bonuses, as none are strong and/or come early enough to make a difference in the speed of province acquisition. Your limiting factors will be ruler points, diplomats, diplomatic slots, anything that suppresses rebels. The sequence of ideas also matter a lot -- some like a tech bonus is very powerful if it's the unlocked idea #1, but quite irrelevant if it's your final bonus. Revolt risk is interesting, though, as it matters a lot more in the late-game than it does early on.

The republican tradition ideas by themselves the best in the game, I'd say. Novogorod gets +1 tradition at #3, +1 missionary strength, and +2 diplomatic reputation. Ireland gets +1 tradition at gamestart (!), and -2 revolt risk. The Irish ideas are the best republican ideas in the game. If any notabable republic had them at gamestart they'd be a massive powerhouse.

Monarchical candidates are plentiful: France, Savoy, England, Austria, Palatinate, Tibet, etc. It would take a lot of play to determine which specific idea set would be best.

Ming or Japan.

Why?

Because if you want to be an asshole you can ROFL stomp everyone and not even have to worry about trivial things like "ideas".

But if you don't want to be an asshole they suddenly become horrendously under-powered.

Lulz.

The irish idea set has that amazing republican tradition, sure, but I think novogord edges it out as far as the rest of them are concerned. In terms of republican tradition countries, Novgorod is probably the strongest choice. That said, their other ideas are still a bit lackluster compared to some of the other nations listed.

It seems like Prussia and Novgorod keep popping up as popular answers-and I still have a place in my heart for good ol' Russia. Any other front runners? I still want to see someone make a case for Ragusa or Najdi ideas. And remember, there's more to ideas than combat!

I made a case for the Hansa, Ragusa, Sienna and Switzerland. I would love to have Swiss or Sienna ideas as the Hansa. As to the economic ones I have been trying hard to abuse them and I think I may have broke them IDK.

Don't forget-this is regardless of starting position or country. One national idea set might *feel* really strong when you play that nation, but in reality it could just be a good nation start (or a bit of luck!)

I'll make a case for Najd.

Najd's primary value comes from two ideas: +1 attrition and -10% land maintenance. +1 attrition is pretty obvious: a big part of war is just letting your enemy use up their manpower buffer, so you don't have to play whack-a-stack. The faster this happens, the less manpower you waste, the better off you are.

-10% land maintenance is underrated, but when you observe the before and after of it, it's pretty clear how useful it is. It really does make the difference between running a huge deficit at war, and barely noticing whether or not you have the maintenance slider up at max.

The other ideas aren't great, but are no slouch: 3% missionary power right from the get go is very useful, and ensures quick conversions, especially combined with the +1 missionary. Obvious synergy with the +2 tolerance as well. The only real bad pick is the stab cost modifier. Stab just isn't something that comes up that often, and -10% might come out to, at most, 400 points. It's not that big of a deal.

The Theocratic idea branch seems rather fun to use. The +1 to atrition when combined with the +1 attrition for maxing out defence can be brutal. The only problem is you have to survive Denmark + Sweden + Norway wars every 5-10 years due to Denmark INSISTING it wants your land.

I have a soft spot for Burgundy's crazy merc bonuses, although the rest of their ideas are nothing special.

Indian Sultanates are the best for spreading the true faith. Most of their ideas are so-so, but 50% religious unity and 5% missionary strength is just crazy.

When it comes to idea sets with Republican Tradition, I'd say the USA gives Novgorod a run for its money.

I find this question quite subjective and based a lot on player's own preference for playstyle.
Me personally always prefer diplomatic and conversion bonuses, as I find these the most limiting factor in expansion/stabilizing conquests.

Diplomatic bonus is nice, but you have to take into account the new system which implies a HUGE tax base is needed to actually vassalize someone worthy.
Based on my gameplay, Russian has the best set of NI. Add them some miltech and they are unstoppable.
Prussian are good too and swedish as well.
