I was checking out the inventions, I noticed soldier_to_pop_loss mentioned in a few, such as combat_medicine, vaccination and two others. I was wondering what exactly soldier_to_pop_loss is, I am assuming it determines the level at which the soldier population demotes to the general population? is this a correct assumption?

if so, soldier_to_pop_loss = -0.1 would translate to a 10 likely-hood of soldiers not demoting?

soldier_to_pop_loss affects how many of your actual soldier pops die when their brigades take damage in battle. I think the default value is 0.2 in vanilla, so that should mean for every five soldiers you lose in combat, the soldier pop providing the regiment loses 1 pop. Example: Taking 10k losses in combat = 2000 killed soldier pops.

What if your army "surrenders" though? Is this only relevant to soldiers who die in battle, or does it extend to all soldiers you lose to battles? And what about attrition?

Attrition, and losses in battles have similar effect on soldiers population.I think when army surrender you lose population too, at

All soldier losses should apply the loss. Surrender equals total destruction.
