I'm playin as Italy too. When the war broke out, my supply convoys to Ethiopia were blocked. I didn't notice that at first, before my bombers and a fleet there were going out of fuel. My troops there are almost out of supplies too.

I thought I could save my Ethiopian troops by conquering areas on Suez or Gibraltar, but I haven't much time. Any suggestions?

Yeah. you pretty much need to give up on Ethiopia and Somalia as Italian conquests once the war starts in earnest. Or - and this worked surprisingly well for me - liberate them, making independent Ethiopia and Somalia your puppets. What I did is this, plus I gave all the Italian militia units that start in E. Africa as expeditionary forces.

I figured they'd still be just a speed bump for the British - and, indeed, Somalia folded like a cheap suit - but Ethiopia held on forever, losing their port, but tying down a whole bunch of British and Commonwealth divisions from Addis Ababa and about 4-5 other provinces. They were still holding out quite nicely in early 1942, when I finally got around to linking up Egypt and Ethiopia. (This is a really tricky but fun area to fight in, incidentally, given all the low-infrastructure provinces in the area.)

Got a little problem...I play as Italy and I conquered all the provinces around the Suez Canal...but I still can't go through it with my navy !?!? Is there something special to do to open the canal to my ships?
The message I got is : "this is beyond the range of these units".
I had exactly the same problem: Suez conquered, but no access to the Red Sea (and no, it was not because of the range, my navy was based in Alexandria with at least 2000 km range). Suez was cleared for me when Nationalist Spain conquered Gibraltar - don't ask how this works...
I emailed the problem to Paradox, but it cannot hurt to do it again to emphasize the problem and to give them another example. ;)

To help my troops in Ethiopia, I decided to make desperate landing on Suez.

At this point UK and France had sea superiority, and my main battlefleet was recovering in naval bases. I used some subs to notice that Brits hadn't any divisions in Suez. So I selected three of my best divisions with good general and transported them over the sea. Luckily I didn't encounter enemy fleets, because those transports had nearly none covering fleet.

After I took Suez with those troops, my convoys are now doing their job, and Ethiopia is supplied again. It seems that convoys can pass Suez canal now, but my battlefleet can't.

Had the same problem too. Own both sides as Italy but can't sail through. There is a workaround though. If you have a port on the other side (like Medina, or the one in Ethiopa) you can rebase your fleets there and they'll sail through the Suez, not around Africa.

Nope, you get a "it is out of range" message. :)

I had it too...solution is to click to send the fleet to Suez ( if you try to go passed it you have the message out of range ), then once in suez click to the adjacent naval hex, then once passed it you can go all the way where you want...it looks like suez hex triggers a bug or something which prevent you to go trough it ....as if you stop at the toll desk.....

.

...can someone offically confirm that this problem is not WAD and will be solved with "enhancement" 1.2 ?

as it's right now:

- as GER controlling both (Suez & Port Said) and can't move my fleet through Suez but the Allies can !!!

- but for some reasons I can rebase naval units to my bases in the indian ocean

same for gibraltar:

- controlling Ceuta but not Gibraltar: I can't move through but the allies can!

I have the same thing. As Germany, my Axis partner Italy has taken Suez and everything even close, and Italy can pass the Canal but my Mediterranean U-boat fleet cannot. It's bugged, I'm afraid.

Don't Forget

Hey Every time you take control of a Canal. Save the game and reload it, as the game doesn't always notice!!!!

Works in HOI and HOI2 I think!

I've seen this bug before. Rebasing to Alexandria if going north or Medina if going south is the workaround.

There's a related bug about Denmark; you get out-of-range messages when trying to go through that area during Fall Weserubung as Germany, even though you have the Kiel Canal and should be able to sail in and out of the Baltic with no problems whatsoever. oddly, sometimes transport fleets will be able to sail in and out while warhips get an out of range message.

.

1. I hope so

2. I have no idea why

3. Are they passing trough suez canal

4. You have to own gibraltar just paradrop from southern france and if the drop fails make sure that your trooops are able to retreat to spain
