Forewards to Warsaw, Paris, and London.

Date: 17 Sept, 1939.
Place: States Building

It is time for the operation to begin. We should have enough time before Winter comes and we must halt operations. We have 12 Panzer IV Divisions, 9 Pz III, 68 Infantry, 12 Mot Inf. A few dozen citizen divisions for garrison troops have also been formed. Several Staffles of Stuka-98Gs with Me-109s for escort stand ready. We have a few wings of Do-17s, but not as many as we would like.

We Kicked off with a declaration of war against Poland after presenting our documents to the League of Nations...which promptly buried them in some proceedural debate.

12 of our Brand new Pz IV divisions under a up and coming General Rommel smashed across the border at Poznan with supporting attacks coming from Oppeln. There was little resistance due to the hours of pounding from our brothers in the Luftwaffe. From there the those forces(12 Pz IV, 12 Mot Inf, 24 Inf) split off into three groups. 4 Pz IV, 4 Mot Inf and 8 Inf each. They threw their weight of blood and steel at Bydgoszez, Lodz and Czestochowa. The first attack against Bydgoszez went off without a hitch and easy rolled over 4 old style calvary units. However, things were not going so well on the other fronts. Delays in getting several units supplied with the correct ammunition (since several had just recently been upgraded) held the attack back by several hours. That unfortunately favored the defenders. Attacking at night is never the best thing to do with new troops.

Consequently, several of our newest divisions lost several hundred men and much of their equipment was severly damaged. They had to fall back to Poznan to reorganize and await new equipment and men.

We had thrown 9 Pz III Divisions to lead the spearhead at Cracow. Unfortunately, our radio intercepts had underestimated not only the strength of the enemy (we thought they had 4-6, they actually had 18!), but also how long they had been there. We were expecting hasty fighting positions and encountered layered defenses, tank traps, anti-personel mine fields with anti-tank mines thrown around. The attack was stopped cold with major loss of life and equipment. Fortunately, the commander realized that he could not break through and withdrew his command before any of the divisions were shattered.

Over the course of the next few weeks, many attempts were made to break through the front and even with Stuka and Do-17 support, the Poles dug their heals in.

Then a very early winter came and made combat next to impossible, as our equipment was not suited for the bitter temperatures. However, this did give our research team time to complete a new project. Nebelwerfers. These were immediately rushed into production and given top priority. As soon as they were ready, they were flown to the front and attached to any combat unit that went through the training on the new equipment.

January brought even colder temperatures, but things were finally heating up on the western front as France and the United Kingdom declared war on us...finally honoring their treaty with Poland.

To be continued....

Heh, as soon as I can get out of work. I really need to win the lottery...

I will be home in about 5 1/2 hours or so. Give me about another half and hour to get screen shots uploaded and what not...I am typing up from memory what I did last night (this morning).

Our U-boats had been cycling through their patrol routes for months in the Atlantic waiting for orders to either start attacking the convoys they were tracking every day or to defend themselves in case they were attacked.

Before our subs could decode the war warning message (several air raids had damaged the transmitters in our ports), a fleet of British CV, BB, CA and DD attacked one of our sub wolfpacks. Unfortunatley for them, they stumbled upon it in the dark...rather than scouting it out with their planes during the day. Engaging at a range the ranges they were was akin to a knife fight for the large Carriers, Battleships and Heavy Cruisers. Only the Destroyers were moderately effective in damaging several subs, but none severely. While two of the Battleships actually targetted one of their carriers and heavy cruiser in the chaos of that night. (though how somone could mistake one of our subs for a carrier or cruiser is beyond me!).

Over the course of the next few months, reports would trickle into the Kriegsmarine headquarters with reports of sinking French and British convoys. Sometimes, as high as 17 in one battle. Though it is common for commanders to count a ship as sunk and have it not sink (either through the efforts of it's crew or just luck).

The battle for the supremecy of the skies over our western border raged for months. We won most battles that we fought, however, there were not enough fighter squadrons to patrol the skies.

More fighters and infantry were pushed into the production requests with high priority, Nebelwerfers are great...but they need the factories to remain operational..and for that we need more fighters.

February 1940.

Allied planes are raiding units we have stationed in Berlin, but doing no real damage. Just an annoyance, though damaging to our ego.

The ground is still frozen on the eastern front and despit numerous attempts to break through...none have been successful at holding the ground. We have had one or two break throughs, only to have the Poles rush fresh forces in and route us right back from where we came. They have a large number of infantry. We have counted over 45 divisions, and between what we have to keep on the western front to keep the allies at bay and the advantages that the Poles have at being dug in, sitting behind rivers (in many cases) and the weather..we do not have enough forces to break through as originally planned. However, Herr General SouthCarolinian came to me with a suggestion.

When the weather finally broke in March and the ground began to thaw...we began to move some of our units to their Spring staging areas. The line stretched from the North in Konigsberg to the south in Berslau/Oppeln. Once the ground had thawed out and dried out, thus making it useable for our armored forces once more...we sprang into action. The middle of our line attacked, but only to support thrusts from Konigsberg into Suwalki and from Breslau/Oppeln into Cracow. These battles were over quickly, as the enemy divisions in these two provinces had been under round the clock dive bombing for 2 1/2 months now by our Stukas and Do-17s. Quickly, so as not to lose momentum, we pushed on. Suwalki->Bielsk. The southern prong waited a few days as recon from the Luftwaffe noticed several divisions pulling out of the main lines and racing north to meet the main advance. However, this time the Poles had made a mistake. The main threat came from the south. During the winter we had shifted the majority of our medium armor to the south, with the new infantry divisions equiped with the Nebelwerfers. After a week, they struck...hard.

Cracow was the springing board for 48 Divisions, of which only 24 were able to take part, however the remaining 24 started down the road as soon as the Poles were routed. Thus, when the original 24 arrived in Przemysl with some minor damage and fatigue, the follow on divisions roared past them full speed and slammed into the still fleeing Poles and the shaken defenders in Stryj.

May 1939. The ground is fully firm in all but the most swampy of areas. Our armor units continue to hound the Poles without letup. After ancoring the corner of the trap in Stryj, they swing north through Lvov. When the defenders are not being torn apart from tank cannon, machine guns, Nebelwerfers or rifle and grenade fire..they are facing more pain from above. The sirens on the Stukas has a cummulative effect after hearing it for hours at a time (even though it is actually only a few minutes).

On and on the armored spearhead stabs. Kowel->Brest Litovsk...finally closing the trap. Finally, the panzers can rest and refuel, but not for long. They have to begin to dig in, for they are going to be attacked shortly, not only from the 38 divisions that they have encircled and cut off from the rest of their country, but from the 14 divisions that are racing west to reach their countrymen.

Try as they may, and they do, the Poles are not able to push the Panzers and Wehrmacht off of the neck of their army. Within two weeks, the order comes to begin to advance. The Divisions that were left behind to guard the over run provinences now turned north into Zamosc and Kielce. Then Radom and Lublin. By now Warsaw was overflowin with over 40 divisions, prior to this...an impossible task to take on.

However, cut off from supplies and fuel for nearly 3 weeks..and with the Polish Commanding General overwhelmed with trying to coordinate 40 divisions...and faced with an attack from 4 sides with over 50 divisions and over 24 staffle of various bombers in ground attack mode. There was no need to try to disrupt their organization...for they had none. It was a slaughter. Over 40 divisions wiped out in 3 days. The only thing that slowed down the demise...was the fact that the attackers had to refuel, rearm and eventually get some sleep.

In the end of May 1939, Germany Annexed Poland.

The Luftwaffe General Staff has reflected on the Polish campaign and we have found that immobile units that have had time to dig into their positions are relatively invulnerable to ground attack from our Stukas. The Stukas are best deployed either on ground attack against moving units or units that have recently arrived where they are sitting. For dug-in units, interdiction attacks can still have some measure of effectiveness. For future campaigns, we recommend that you hold back the CAS from attacking immobile ground targets and instead soften their organization to allow for an easier victory by our forces. After the enemy has been dislodged from their fortifications, Stukas can be reassigned to ground attack. Retreating units are extremely vulnerable to Stuka attack.

Give me about 15 minutes or so to start loading screenies of where we stand etc. I have to take the wife out for dinner, she just landed a job that she had been interviewing for (she has one now, but this one is better).

Depending on my state of mind when I get back, I will play some tonight, definately a good bit on the weekend. So I need a few things.

1) A break down of your personal units again (sorry). Please note that bridgades will have to be built, but the good news is that we should have enough armor to go around.

2) Research priorities

3) Build priorities.

On a side note, I noticed that I had to scrap most of the build queue in order to get around the CTD bug before...so I am chalking up the loss of the surface fleet to a last gasp of the Polish Sabateurs again.

Herr Chancellor,

For the layout of Wächter Kampfgruppe I would like to propose a mix of Panzer, Motorized, and Panzergrenadier units. preferably four Panzer divisions, three Panzergrenadier divisions and two motorized divisions. This unit is will be the ideal unit for spearheading breakthrough operations and wrecking havoc behind enemy lines.

Reflection on the Polish Campaign.
It is the Armee's conclusion that we must put a priority on making holding attacks against enemy units to keep enemy units from moving about. Then we will break the equilibrium in one part of the enemy's line with an armored thrust followed by infantry who will mop up. These armored units should then be employed in encirclement maneuvers so we can quickly defeat our opponents in detail. Also, as Herr Savage Man said, once we push enemy units in retreat the Luftwaffe should be called in to destroy the fleeing units rather than taking unnecessary damage throwing themselves against well entrenched units.

And thus on the 8th of Juli...the war continues...updates to follow.
