What if? War Thunder & HOI4 could be mixed/modded into 1 game?

nope nope nope nope... Hearts of Iron is a game that's deep and all the important facts and history is researched and correct. War Thunder is a game, where Russian planes fly just how the devs want them to fly and everything not allied underperforms just because "the axis lost the war", because that's obviously how the world works at the Gayjin studio. Please never ever talk about a combination of Hearts of Iron (awesome game) and War Thunder (piece of crab).

I see the whinerwaffe has blitzed all the way to these forums aswell

yeah because only Germans complain about Russians^^ sure If you don't see, that the FMs in War Thunder are fantasy, I'm really sorry for you.

A lot of people in this thread are missing the point of the OP's idea. I don't think he's really talking about War Thunder itself, but more of the idea of meshing Hearts of Iron-type grand strategy with War Thunder style (ignore the pay to win crap) tactical combat. The general idea is that you would play HOI as normal, but when you wanted to you could zoom in on an ongoing battle and take individual control of units on a real-time battlefield, from divisional level maybe even down to individual soldiers, pilots, tanks, etc. So basically you would be meshing an FPS, RTS, and grand strategy all on a seamless, real time map.

Of course the computing power necessary for this would be ridiculous and I can't see anything like this happening for something like 10 years at the least, but I do think someone will eventually try it out because it would be the ultimate World War 2 (or whatever war you're playing) simulator at all levels.

ACTUALLY ......... Games with this intent DO exist - so it is possible to have a game in this direction contrary to what a lot of people are posting here - for example:

1) Heroes & Generals

2) WWIIOL

go google / wiki them!!!

I am a big strategy fan myself and play the Hearts of Iron series. I also play / have played these games. This combination (grand strategy and logging into tactical battles to play them FPS style) is indeed very interesting and has it's merits - NO the campaigns do not last forever contrary to what you might think. It's actually VERY MUCH fun to play in a battle whose circumstances you helped determine. The players give the battles meaning by the strategy that is behind them. This actually results in the very interesting effect that players can accept unbalanced forces due to the; "underdog challenge effect where yes you are fighting superior forces but if you win this you win the grand strategy - for example because it is an important potential breakthrough location"

But combining HOI4 with another game is WAAAAAY beyond any resources paradox has. So simply no from this perspektive. If you want that type of game go check out Herores & Generals and WWIIOL - then you will find out what it takes - it is indeed mind boggling

Maybe somewhere in the future like 2020+ when computers are even more powerfull!!! ..... one can dream :D

Ehh

EHHH

Sure, H&G has something cool with a map and all, but it really can't be said to be a mix of strategy and fps shooter or something.

It´s simply impossible to mix the scale of this game with War Thunder, I don´t even know why waste time.

Much better to do a GOOD sim with a decent dynamic campaign where your actions have local impact. Because on the scale of HOI, one pilot is an ant.

If it was Blitzkrieg 1 + HoI 3/4 now that would be interesting, that each battle on the campaign would generate a random battle scenario according to the untis and attributes of the campaign battle and maybe commanding those forces on the battlefield could give a small bonus on the overall battle.

Since blitzkrieg 1 is 2.5D you can really have thousands of units on screen per side and infantry is also on the game.

With warthunder or other fps that you take the role of just one soldier it doesn't make much sense other than having a 1st person view of the battle, a soldier couldn't really change a war.

You can't compare WW2ol or H&G these are MMOs with hundreds of thousands of players that can impact a game since these are pure PvP games AI units play no role here and the amount of players is like 1000...

You guys are so closed minded, someday this may be a reality, why not? (not War thunder + HoI 4)
In a way we have a few people asking for more provinces divisions, a closer level even, again, why not?
Because you don't like?
Hell, if they added that feature in HoI 4 I bet you would still buy it! lol

Please respect that people have different opinions! There is no need to insult someone or imply they are of lesser intellect because they don't share the same views as you. Either you ignore this thread, or if you feel you want to explain why it's a bad idea, then do so using civilized language and logic reasoning.

We regularly get the suggestions to combine our games, either with others of our own or with external titles (honorable mentions: CK2 and War of the Roses/Vikings, Make EU4 as a Total War clone, make one game combining all features from CK, EU, HoI and Vic or use Google Earth as game map etc etc). Who knows what the future holds. But for now such projects are not realistic, but keep on dreaming and share your ideas and visions. We enjoy hearing about that, and who knows. One day one or two of the ideas may be doable :)

TL;DR Respect each other. Arguments should be factual and contain something valid, not be like this:

I agree with Beagá here that FPS also doesn't make much sense other then as a mode to view the battle. So to be able to influence it you need to take at least one step back and command the battle similar to an RTS game. Give more detailed orders to smaller units of tanks/soldiers/ships/airplanes in a more detailed timescale and zoomed in map.

But for most battles I don't think it's even meaningful to try to model them in this RTS detail.

It is already a problem in the total war games that a campaign takes forever to play through if you go into and command every single battle, so now imagine that you need to do it in real time because war thunder is a realtime based multiplayer game...

A campaign of HoI4 would take years or realtime to resolve = not fun.

There is also the issue of what do you do when there are 25 active land battles and 10 air engagements at the same time in the Barbarossa front and you feel the urge to manage all of them in greater detail to get the best result... Do you run them out of sync of each-other or pause and jump between them in some way?

Not really doable.

What might be possible to do in a fun way however is to run a few key battles in more detailed RTS mode. Things that might fit this bill is Naval engagements involving Capital ships, port strikes, amphibious assaults, paratrooper attacks and larger tank engagements involving 100+ on each side.

These should be rare enough and important enough to be worth always playing in more detail without feeling repetitive or boring and without totally unreasonable gameplay times needed.
