What if? War Thunder & HOI4 could be mixed/modded into 1 game?

Having played Mount and blade: viking conquest & total war games.

I really enjoy the mix of both strategy & tactical design. The problem is that it would take 2 games to merge with each other.

Why not?

All the models are there, soon War thunder will also have battleships, ... . It would be nice if you were able to jump in to one of your battles even if it is only against bots.

You think such a coöperation is possible?

Edit: Just to be clear, this is not the idea that players are forced to play each battle manually! Players would be able to choose a battle they want to play and would then be able to play them with their upgraded units / tech choices. For example, a "siege of Leningrad battle" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Leningrad or crucial battles like"the battle for Bastogne" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Bastogne

And there are plenty of other options:
Codename: Panzers

Wargame: Red Dragon (converting it to a WWII game)

There is no possible way this can work out without making an entire new engine and re-designing both games... it would likely take years to do such a thing and I highly doubt there would be much point to such an enormous development investment. War Thunder can't simulate division-level battles (not even brigade-level) and I (and I believe everyone else who understands how this would work) don't see the point in simulating small-scale engagements because they will have no relevance on the HoI 4 world. It would make a single HoI 4 playthrough take ages and the entire battle could be very unbalanced, leading to your divisions being wiped out because one of the teams had more skilled players, or, if it's the AI involved, would give an enormous advantage to the player side as players can always be better than the AI. Nor would it make sense to decide the fate of division battles based on some small-scale 10v10 or whatever battle.

The only way I see the two games coming together is on marketing level, and even then not sure why.
Maybe, combining events like an alternate-history scenario in HOI4 is replicated in WarThunder with the planes used in HOI4.

By the way, I really like WarThunder, even though the pricing is just insane and basically forces you to either spend nothing or commit the whole of your salary.

That sounds fantastic, I can't wait to spend the rest of my life finishing just one campaign.

No, you won't have to fight every battle: you have the option to fight the battles you want to fight. And you get a feel for the units that you have researched, you get to see them in action.

I don't believe this would work, but I have always had this craving to be part of a specific epic battle. Sadly this is not possible due to the whole thing about having hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the same instance which would be unpractical and sadly not possible.

I think it would only work if they also combined with call of duty so that you can fight urban battles, train simulator so you can drive the supply trains and also the sims so that you can choose the furniture in your wolfs layer

I can see the emotional appeal of the OP's suggestion, but like most folk have suggested, it's not likely to end well. Far, far better to have one game that focuses on being the best WW2 GSG game it could be, and another that focuses on being the best tactical, small-scale combat game it could be (and on that note, War Thunder has a ways to go - it's good in many ways, but it's got a lot of design black holes as well).

By the way, I really like WarThunder, even though the pricing is just insane and basically forces you to either spend nothing or commit the whole of your salary.

Haha, this - ironically, if War Thunder's prices were cheaper, I'd spend more on it, but I'm not playing the cost of CK2: Charlemagne for one in-game aircraft!

This would be such a monumental design challenge that it would essentially be impossible to do well. Heroes and Generals does a very abstract version of the strategy, and that's probably as good as you're going to get.

It's a good idea, and it's something I like too when done well (I love the X-Com concept for this very reason), and it could probably be implmented at least as something you do manually ("okay, we've got a battle in the Caucaus featuring these units, let's make a quick War Thunder custom mission and play it out"). It might even be possible to make some sort of program that reads HOI4 save files, looks through battles being fought, and somehow writes WT scenarios accordingly, taking location, weather and types of divisions fighting.

The main problem I see has to do with scope, though. We're talking battles with tens of thousands of units that could take a long time to fight, and during WWII there were, sadly, a lot of them, so you have the combination of number of events and their sheer size. What I like about Rome: Total War (only one I got into) and the X-Com games are how the strategic level and the tactical level "scale" 1:1: if you send 10 squaddies into battle in X-Com, you fight with 10 squaddies, and if three of them die, seven return home. It's not like in some RTS games where you send a generic unit to a province, fight it out as a regular RTS battle (building a town, raising an army, etc.) and then return to the main map to see that generic unit again. I feat that if some "HOI4 to something else" conversion happened, there would perhaps neccessarily be a change of scale involved.

This kind of thing has been done before (there was a Dwarf Fortress to Minecraft save converter once, for example ;) ), and I do admit, it would be awesome to play HOI4 and then hop into the action as a tank commander, pilot, infantryman or ship captain, but I'm honestly not sure exactly how it would be implemented.
