One of the few things that has annoyed me while playing is that no matter how things go, your units will always look the same. Even in a best-case scenario Japan or the Teutonic Order will end up wearing the same cookie-cutter western uniforms as everybody else (although at least Japan gets snazzy hats), regardless of your wishes for them to resist foreign influence. Or on the other end of the dilemma no matter how much you may wish to become a modern, westernized civilization as Tibet or Bengal you'll always have a more traditionally dressed military.
So my suggestion is this: Rather than there being a linear progression of models (or in addition too), make a split tree to simulate the influence that guides your fashion sense such as it were. Perhaps it could be done via event, with your units using the traditional model tree prior to westernization and an event popping up during the process asking you if you want to alter your uniforms or if you think that your soldiers should still look as they did. For example; Japan has decided to westernize, they now must choose whether they wish to embrace all aspects of this new culture or if they wish to retain the samurai trappings of their ancestors and continue to wear armor into battle. This would not only add more flavor to the game, but allow the player greater choice as to the direction of their nation. It could even potentially come with associated risks and rewards, like staying traditional would lessen the unrest among your people but slow the westernizing process as the foreign advisors argue about the decision or ridicule your choice of attire although that might be a bit unneccesary (don't want to mess with people's attempts to keep up with the game just because the want to look nice).
Just a thought. I don't even know if this is possible to implement, let alone practical (although [and I'm sure there will be plenty of people angry at me for suggesting this] it would allow for more opportunity for Content Packs), but it would be nice to see.
