What if there is no monarchs.XXX file?

How does the game give monarchs to countries without monarchs.XXX files? Does it ever let them die or do they live forever - like the last Aztec or Inca monarchs?

Context: I set the KoJ free and its monarch is called de Aguirre. That sounds a lot like one of my (Portuguese) leaders. According to the entry in the save game file he is th KoJ's only monarch, and will die in 1640.

What determines their names? They seem to get names that are accurate (NA names for NA tribes, Italian names for italian countries, etc.)

The KoJ has arabic culture (eh???) so the name of the leader does surprise me a little.

They were released by a Hispanic country, maybe that has something to do with it?

The country gets an immortal 7/7/7 monarch. The monarch name is chosen from the list of random leaders that the country can get.

That is a rather interesting thing to me too. I remember when I released KoJ and they had some latin sounding monarch with pretty good stats

Who would have thought they could make such an impressive showing in 1500!

The KoJ does not have a leader file. It doesn't have any files at all, only a very absurd entry in country.csv - they're set to be openminded and have pretty free peasants, for example. That's NOT how I imagine a medieval crusader state!!!

I edited the savegame and adjusted them to full narrowmindedness, serfdom and aristocracy and gave them iberian, french and italian culture, but removed the arab culture.

Oh and I edited the revolts.txt file so I could release them with 4 provinces - Judaea, Samaria, Lebanon and Syria... If I set up a crusader state I want it as big as possible... And I gave them CB shields on Sinai, Jordan and Aleppo, and added Hedjaz to as aggression target into their ai file. (crusader.ai, downloaded from... ummm... dunno)

Will the game read a monarchs.jer file if I add it into the appropriate directory, and do I have to edit something else in the savegame file?
I saw that many countries have full lists of monarchs already written into their savegame entries. Does the game read the monarchs lists only at the beginning of a campaign or does it accept later additions?

Correction, the Monarch is 5/5/5

No, it's 7/7/7. I've tried playing as a country that has no monarch file, as a country that gets its first monarch in the 18th century, and releasing a vassal that has no monarch file, and in all cases, it's 7/7/7.

Remember that your diplo rating might not be 7 due to the Aristocracy slider, but the monarch's natural rating is still 7.

Oops, you're right. I checked and it is 7/7/7 (kinda high IMO), I must've thought the Helvetican Monarch was random, but its not. D'oh.

The countries that get such monarchs are so pitifully weak that I don't view their having a good monarch as a problem.
