I can't see all the images (broken links) but the California flag should have a bear on it, with a small star up in the corner. It's not a rampant bear though, it's walking on all fours (similar to the lions on the British coat of arms, or the beaver on the Lenape flag in-game).
And yes, the star is supposed to be red. It always has been. The rest of the flag is white with a thin red stripe on the bottom.

What would you put on such a flag? I don't think we can use standard heraldic rules because that will result in us 1024thing the shield.

There's a NATO flag and a European Union flag floating around. Since this is called 'Europa Universalis' you could probably use one of those for a world conquest....

...also had a "what if" idea... how about a flag for a French United States (rather than British in colonial origin), with a gold fleur-de-lis on blue replacing the white stars on blue in the corner?
...For that matter a Normandy flag would be nice too. I don't know what it would look like, but it would be nice to be able to set it loose as a vassal in those England games where you don't want to bother with France.

I have made a Greater Britain flag. It combines the flags of England, Scotland, Erie, and France.
