A few days back I got involved with the a EEP Italy thread, and we started discussion on a hypothetical flag/shield for an Italian Kingdom for the pre 1800s. This discussion lead me to create a shield which is a sort of union of various symbols of Italian states such as Milan's serpent, Venice's lion, Tuscany's dotted necklace, etc. This seems like a more 'historical' flag than the red, white, and green tricolor for an Italian Kingdom from 1400-1800. http://www.geocities.com/medius_aetus/shields.html#I
well the rules of heraldry advise against combining metals and most shades of orange and yellow are 'gold' and most shades of white are 'silver'. The flag of the Kingdom of Jerusalem for instance goes against most heraldic rules
The reason being is at a distance you can't tell what the hell is on the flag
the old papal banner followed the rules of heraldry almost to the letter. The keys are placed in the center, and the keys use one of the two metals, against a red background.
When the new papal banner was released, a lot of heraldry experts decried it as a horror
