Posting so that you trash my wrong assumptions.
Valid at the very least for Brazil:

1) It's better to get provinces (if low on BB) then to force a satellization. Land means RGOs, wich mean money and industrial score. Satellites give nothing good relations and a couple of treaties can't give.

2) Unless you're one of the Big 8 from the get-go, it's pointless to dream about a Navy and to put tech effort in it.

3) Importing raw materials to export industrial goods gives less money then just exporting your own raw materials. If you can't feed a factory on exclusively native stuff it's better to send the POPs farming for tobaco/cofee/sugar.

4) Always atack inferior armies on 3-1 or 4-1 odds, and never atack French/Uk/similars, no matter what the superiority. Just don't get into wars with them ever ever ever.

5) Capitalists rock.

1) True

2) Almost true, if you're rich enough and have the tech you can put effort to it, you don't have to be a Great-Power

3) Depends on the factory effiecncy

4) Depends, if the enemy is fortified in a forest on a mountain, you'll need 10-1, in an open plain, 1-1 with a nice general and artillery might work. Tech and brigades matter too, so attacking Korea will be easier then attacking Denmark.

5) If you have "laser fairy", they do, maybe also under intervensionism, but with any of the other two, I consider them a burden on society

Edit: So OHgamer, posts before me. That happens to everybody, not only is he a great vicky player and modder, he's also damn quick on the keyboard!

1) Yeah, might be good to satellite just to make sure they wont bother you again though.

2) Well...tech-rushing commerce raiders and sinking all wooden ships without breaking a swett can work;)

3) Depends on a whole lot of things. Infrastructure, efficency techs etc. In the begining importing all but the cheapist stuff is a big no no (grain, fruit, fish and cattle might work at game start). Later some more expensive stuff can be imported for proffit, just dont expect to be able to run a tank factory without domestic production...;)

4) Well, this is the period of ww 1. Defense is king.

5) Except when you realy need that tank factory late game;)

Edit
...sort of emued;)

Seriously? I've only seen one, in a tentative war against France, and I sunk that baby with no losses. It has a couple of frigates supporting it too.

Well their not complete doomsday devices, could be that France didn't have maintenence up but, but I think 1:3 odds against Man o wars is possible to win without trouble. Not to sure of the number, but I have been able to win realy crushing victories against sailing fleets.

All of the following comments are my own, personal opinion only and should not be viewed as game axioms. ;)

1) It's better to get provinces (if low on BB) then to force a satellization. Land means RGOs, wich mean money and industrial score. Satellites give nothing good relations and a couple of treaties can't give.
The purpose of war in VR is to gain prestige, not to gain territory per se, although there is nothing horrendously wrong with that aspect of it either. As you say, you do have to keep an eye on your badboy score.

WIN = Industrial Score + Military Score + PRESTIGE. See my point?

War against a single nation should consist of several wars for maximum benefit.
War -> Humiliate (to get loser's score down to less than -100, as many humiliations as it takes.)
War -> War Reparations + Prestige
War -> War Reparations + Prestige

Each subsequent war only costs 1 prestige to declare, once the opponents prestige is down to less than -100, so you will often get a +99 prestige gain from each war. Small gains in territory to gain CRITICAL RGO's is a side goal for me, if used at all. Mainly it is about prestige.

In wars against uncivilized nations, and in the gaining of colonies, different rules apply. You should fight wars against uncivilized nations to gain some prestige, but mainly to gain RGO's and manpower.

For the most part, unless you are willing to commit to a long-term game of endless war and conquering, territorial gains from war should be done in small, easily digested bites.

2) Unless you're one of the Big 8 from the get-go, it's pointless to dream about a Navy and to put tech effort in it.
Japan. Only exception that comes to my mind, and that would be in the late game.

3) Importing raw materials to export industrial goods gives less money then just exporting your own raw materials. If you can't feed a factory on exclusively native stuff it's better to send the POPs farming for tobaco/cofee/sugar.
This, while definitely true in the early game, is not quite so true in the late game after you have gained all those income boosting techs from industrial and commerce research. By the 1900's, you can usually safely break this rule and make even more income or at least not have the economy suffer greatly if at all.

4) Always atack inferior armies on 3-1 or 4-1 odds, and never atack French/Uk/similars, no matter what the superiority. Just don't get into wars with them ever ever ever.
Very, very true for Brazil and the other small minor countries.

5) Capitalists rock.
Most assuredly. :D

Is there any way to tell how many POPs are in a province you don't own?

People talk about going after high POP provinces in wars but I have never been able to tell which those are.

You can generally tell by comparing the warscore for each province. Highly populated Chinese province can be worth up to 50% while low populated provinces are usually 1 or 2%.
