Most of my houserules have been mentioned before, although at least one is missing:

Never use scorched earth in a province.

Man, If I didn't use that 30 minutes ago on Austria, my Milan wouldn't exist right now.

I still had to cede Bresica (don't worry I got it all back next war)

Plus scorched earth is like, the greatest video game ever made.

I'm currently playing a Portugal trade/colonization game with the rule: no permanent ownership of wrong-cultured provinces. So colonies are ok, and pagan provinces are ok since they can be converted to your culture. Vassals are ok, and it is ok to take a non-cultured province occasionally but have to sell it to some other country soonish.

When a revolution lasts too long (usually because the revolters are winning handily but can't reach some isolated provinces - why hasn't this been fixed yet, btw?), I load up as one or both of the involved countries and end the war on peace terms that make for pretty borders.

Rule #1A-subparagraph b. All is fair in love and war against France.
Amen.

My houserules are not many, but I tend to have low BB, be a good ally, maintain naval superiority, and be an economic superpower.

Perhaps he was brought aboard the enemy ships and ransomed or even just returned? Wasn't there a certain way you were to treat enemy officers even when they were captured?

The trouble is, that's not the case I was talking about. Rather, it's where the ships die by attrition because you sent them out too far. Given my fondness for changing countries, this can happen a lot.

Another house rule, which I sometimes use: Even investment, at all times. All sliders are at the same level, always. I confess I break that sometimes.

EDIT:

Another one is never changing orders to a fleet at sea, unless they're adjacent to an enemy. Combined with the rule of setting the full path at start, that limits you a good deal, & is much more realistic. Another which I've sometimes used is that Amphib assaults MUST start from the nearest feasible port.

I use all gamey/exploit ways and try to blob/vassalize as many countries as possible. I go for world conquest between me and vassals. The only rule I have is that I start with really weak countries.

Now that I think about it, I was thinking about a new house rule for when I get to the colonization age.

1700+ Rules

1. Ignore colonial revolters for at least half a year before going off to fight.
2. If a colonial revolter appears, let them reclaim all cores before ending the fight.
3. On 1750, release all completely held regions that are not my culture as vassals.
4. On 1800, release the vassals
5. If Revolution is achieved, do not stop fighting until pushed to original borders.

May sound weird but i like my borders in a good smoothy shape.
For instance : http://i40.tinypic.com/nn6yao.jpg

I also like nice borders. :) Infact most of my wars are decided by the look on the map, I will rather refuse some provinces than have some weird bulges on the map.
Also I like to roleplay my nation - doing what they and what seems like they would they do, where would they spread, etc. For example I am playing Byzantium and I dont want to spread in Europe (exception is Italy) although I had several chances - I am reclaiming the Middle East, Egypt and North Africa. I also like islands so that it seems that I control the Med.

If I'm playing the Netherlands and can get a piece of Denmark Bremen was in the way... For now...

Oh wait. I vassalised and annexed them later to make a nice little map. =D

Just Lübeck left to get me the whole northern coast from Calais to Hinterpommern! Then I'll monopolise German sandcastle building and pitdigging and raise a fortune! >:}

Most of you seem to stick to low BB, I really don't...
I just try to crawl to just under the limit when I need it. If I have too high revolt risk or if I want to start a war and gain some provinces.

The only rule I really stick to is low inflation I think. In my current game I got really high inflation at one time, like 6. Oh, the panic! Now I'm back to 0.01 or so.

I do try to have smooth borders as well though.

Well, I personally don't go over infamy limit, tend to respect the casus belli (unless I've got a core on another province, or the one next to it is also my culture/religion) and in a general manner try to keep being plausible as a ruler from this period.

This doesn't mean I'll keep the actual borders, national ideas, ennemies/allies/vassals, though.
I'm basically playing on a "what if" basis and try to see what would happen if something went differently. Of course I'll try to be a major power, but world conquest isn't plausible at all, so it's never the path I'll take.

Also, no cheats and no gamey exploits (except maybe declaring war to guy while I really want his ally :eek:o).

Sometimes I try to help countries I like just for the sake of it, mostly by sending spies or money when they're in trouble.

In EU, I don't have any houserules. EU is a good game in that regard, in other games some restrictions often feels necessary to save immersion and fun.

The one rule I'm considering is leader teleporting.

Dutch Jutland wouldnt work for me. For Netherland I would try to make a trading and colonial empire, with territorial expansion in Europe limited to Benelux and surroundings, land army small and high quality. And of course a killer navy. :)
