Just out of curiousity; what houserules do you use when playing single player?

I got a couple of my own:
1 I don't go to war without CB
2 I keep my BB under the limit

1. stay under the infamy limit at all time.
2. stay (less or more) within the historical borders.
3. attack the emperor after the decision erbkaisertum has passed.
4. change to reformed or protestant ASAP.
5. friends with Holland/Netherlands, Sweden/Scandinavia & Byzantium.
6. enemies with Austria, Bohemia, Holy Roman Empire & Venice.
7. engage in cb-wars to make sure the majors stay within their historical borders.
8. rule number 2 shouldn't conflict with rule number 1, etc, etc.

Well, I never ever go to war without a CB.

I also tend to keep my infamy low, under 10. I hire an advisor or two to get it back to 0 when I gain some infamy.

I also never cheat or use gamey tactics.

There is probably some more I don't remember right now, may be more the way I play then houserules though.

Currently:

1) Don't blob up through war at all.
2) Stay a naval power; only expand through colonization and only force-take the occasional province I needed for colony/ship range and/or resupplying (for example Gibraltar from Granada to ensure colonization is possible in the first place).
3) Be under the influence of the "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" cultural decision. +8 global revolt risk keeps a country of islands exciting, and at full innovative+freesubjects+L,E,F even techs 20-25 years ahead of time just cost ~6000 ducats for a large nation. This may not so much be a house rule as just a thing I do, though.
4) Stay under the BB limit (although with a crappy dip doge, the navigation act, privateers, very hard difficulty, etc, it's a limit of 10. Ouch.)

1) don't avoid some alliances by dowing a different nation that would drag your desired opponent on
2) don't declare war without CB
3) try to keep worthwhile ennemies by not trashing them :D

No beaiming leaders across the planet.

Until I devised my own exploration mod, I always mapped out explorers' routes from the start to end, all at once.

Being a good ally. E.gl, I ALWAYS have to ensure any ally's independence in the peace, in case they were annexed or vassalized during.

My biggest house rule is to stay under the BB limit, preferably half the BB limit.

I also tend to keep the historical character of the country, both by my in-game actions and the NIs that I pick: Castille/Spain will be a crusading colonizer with max. narrowmindedness; the Ottomans will aim to conquer Europe, Middle East and North Africe while eradicating heresy but tolerating the (tax paying) infidels within their borders; and in my current Brandenburgers (soon to be Prussians) will be highly militaristic, aiming at the unification of Germany and its expansion into the East.

That doesn't mean that I won't attempt a WC with these nations, or that I will stick to historical borders. However, the game tends to get boring after awhile, and I prefer the early-middle stages in all my strategy games (Civ to METW to HoI2/3 to EU3...)

Aside from trying to manage BB and CB/Stab issues, most people look at who they're playing, when they're playing, and where they're playing, as well as some historical context and from there figure out what they want to do. Sometimes we want to do what the state did in real history, just more efficiently or earlier, or what-not. Sometimes we want to be the evil twin of our historical counterpart and make a protestant and revolutionary Austria to crush monarchy in France. Just do what you think would make for an interesting game for you. =)

Never breach the BB limit. That's all.

Though sometimes I add other rules. Like in my Italy campaign i've houseruled myself into staying Republic, and limiting what I can actually keep for myself in Europe, opting for vassals instead.

Thais brings a question in my mind. If an explorer is in the middle of the Pacific and the navy sinks due to attrition, how on earth is it possible that the explorer survives and is ready to use right away?

I usually don't WC so infamy, CB, inflation, etc. I take them all seriously.

I try to go easy on nations I don't need to exploit directly (I don't try to collapse France via naval blockades in hopes I'll have a France to fight later)

I never play within the HRE or the Iberian Peninsula - I can't really create a challenge for myself with some of those advantages. (though I do love starting as Holland, Hansa, and TO I just never pursue imperial goals and usually leave the empire when I get the chance)

I'll trap enemy armies on islands, sure. I've a hard time to resolve myself to not taking advantage of AI mistakes. It's like not answering a ringing phone.

No mods - always the latest patched version of the latest expansion.

Gov't flipping to preserve good rulers and get rid of bad one is totally Kosher for me, as you only get a few hundred years to build your empire you can't get stuck with crap rulers who live forever.

No lucky nations. Every other setting on normal.

I dunno, maybe he's a really, really good swimmer:)

Actually, sometimes I've seen them die when the fleet dies, but I don't think it's 100%.

Perhaps he was brought aboard the enemy ships and ransomed or even just returned? Wasn't there a certain way you were to treat enemy officers even when they were captured?

Let's see, just a few for me. Nothing to crazy.

1) No DoW without a proper CB.
2) Always stay under the infamy limit. (Never really come close actually)
3) Under no circumstances surpass Land/Naval force limits.
4) Never hire mercs. (Though with the new beta patch I believe they reinforce; will probably do away with this one in the future)
5) No dumping/switching of NI's. Particularly beelining to trade tech 7 & dumping for QFTNW.
6) I do not target/annex historical colonizers with the explicit purpose of preventing them from doing so. Only if it happens in the flow of the game. Which it rarely does because I am no warmonger. I want the AI to colonize. Love me some colonial wars.
7) Not sure if this one is a house rule or just a pet peeve of mine so to speak. But no matter who I play as.. I must be the pre-eminent naval power in the world or at the very least among them. Which depending on which nation I choose... Could take a while.

Forgot to mention..
8) Always back my allies. No matter how infuriating or annoying the crap they got me into messes up my plans at the moment.
