To your troops I mean. I just spent a couple of weeks around the world recovering an army I lost in one unlucky battle, and just as they were almost perfect... BANG the whole Khanate army jumps on me out of a castle. 70 vs 500. I won the first round, allowing me to flee again, but they instantly cought me and 10 vs 120... yeah, not going to happen. So I surrendered to spare my men. Do they go anywhere?

They become prisoner of those you surrendered to. And might end up in castle or town prison next time he go to his fief. (Not sure if Ai can deposit them in other Lord castle)

Then there's no reason to ever surrender, right? Might as well fight every battle to the death.

I really hate it when you loose your whole army like this. I built up an imressive army (to date) of 80 over the weekend that mainly consisted of elite troops including Rhodok Sergents, Swadian Knights and Hired Blades. Then the first thing I foolishly did yesterday was to decided to raid an enemy village. Since I knew the majority of their lords were on campaign the other side of the map I figured I'd get away with it. But lo and behold who comes to their aid but the enemy King himself with 230 troops. I did pretty well fighting and killing off most of them and I thought I got away with it. Also a lot of my elites were only injured so I was optimistic of a positive outcome after all....

...Unfortunately the last three enemy troops on the map took out my mount and I lost the battle shortly after that! Now I am on a rebuilding phase again, with a presonal vendetta against the Rhodok king.

I wish there was a way for the troops to come back to you like companions do, especially the elites that you spent a lot of time and money training. You'd think that they'll have at least some loyalty towards you!

Then there's no reason to ever surrender, right? Might as well fight every battle to the death.

I haven't found a reason to surrender yet. Even if it's 50 to 1, you might as well fight the battle to the bitter end and and kill a couple and get the experience. I have been successful a couple of times in leaving some troops behind and retreating. Hovever if your speed is slow, this option is a waste...

After a while you'll start taking permanent stat decreases when you get KO'd, so for characters who start getting a bit long in the tooth surrender can be preferable to getting injured.
Wha?!

How is this determined?

It happened to my character. He got captured after a fight and suffered minus 1 agility because of a ruptured tendon or something similar. :( (at least that's what the text said)

hmm, this isn't a mod? Sorry I've just played enough that I would have thought I'd see this before.

Never heard of this, but in the purely awesome mod Brytenwalda you can get injuries when getting knocked down.

That's is from the native expansion mod for the original. Never have had this one with the vanilla.

I play no modifications.
I didn't check if my stats were really reduced or not after I got this message, therefore I am not sure if that really happened. But I am sure however that I was informed about a loss of agility after I got captured.

Regarding losing stats here is a post I read in the Taleworlds forums

Question

"Yeah so I surrendered from a battle (i didnt feel like fighting and i was going to revert back to my last save anyway), and a screen came up explaining how my character injured some tendons or something and I lost 1 strength. I have never had a character for this long and im wondering how often this occurs and if theres anything i can do to prevent it."

Reply:

You must have a very, very long running game. It shouldn't even have a chance of you losing stats until you're about 757.5 days, and even then it should only be a 1% chance. Unless theres a way of losing luck that I don't know about. You can see your current luck by going into the retirement screen (you don't actually have to retire) by using camp - retire from adventuring. It shows the luck and asks if you want to retire.

How it actually works is, whenever you get defeated to the point of capture (or surrender) it generates a random number from 0-99. If that number is greater than or equal to your luck, you get -1 to a stat.

So to answer your question, it's probably not very likely - unless you're way over 757.5 days into the game. It would take 1500 days to get a 100% chance of losing stats, with the range in between being 1% for every 7.5 days.

Once you're at that point you better try not to get captured "

Then there's no reason to ever surrender, right? Might as well fight every battle to the death.
Seems to be the case.
