...And your senior partner is in the HRE.

So, I was playing as Poland -> Commonwealth, and had become permanent emperor of the HRE by proclaimg erbkaisertum. I had no intention of uniting the HRE, or going any further with the reforms, so I just let my IA build up.

I was happily conquering my way through the hordes in the east, when I was suddenly PU'ed by the vile, treacherous Palatinate scum, whom I had been planning to diplovassalize. I'm not sure what caused this- I didn't get any notification of my throne being claimed, and I had considerably higher prestige than them. Either way, this put me in a PU under them.

Naturally, I first tried to declare independence- except I couldn't, because landfriede prevents any wars from being waged in the empire, and I had joined it at the start of the game. So, after a few years of suffering under the wretched humilation of being controlled by a 3-province minor, I decided to try a more drastic solution. (Also, it should be noted that the king was in his late twenties, so it could have lasted decades.)

I decided to revoke the privilegia. I figured, if the Palatinate was my vassal, that would break me out of the personal union. Or break the game, either one. Still, it was better than waiting it out.

Unfortunately, the Palatinate got into a war of succession with Sweden over Bavaria, so I ended up delaying my plans for several years while my giant vassal horde crushed the Swedes. And so the Palatinate gained a second PU. The good news is, all that fighting and 'defending' brought my IA up to 90+.

Anyway, I revoked the privilegia. And it worked! Revoking it broke both my PU and Bavaria's, placing both of them under my control as vassals. And my game didn't break at all.

Either way, here is the aftermath:

Philipp Wilhelm I von Wittelsbach. Note his stats and age.

The coronation date here is the date the wretched PU was forced onto me.

And Bavaria.

------

So, why bother telling this story? Well, I just wanted to make a couple of observations to help out other players, since some of the HRE mechanics can be a bit odd at times. To sum it up:

-If you become the junior partner in a PU while emperor, after proclaiming erbkaisertum, you will still stay emperor.

-Revoking the privilegia while under a PU, and your senior partner is in the HRE, breaks the PU and vassalizes them. Of course, that requires that they vote yay to it. *This appears to be mistaken, unfortunately. See edit.

-If a HRE member has PUed another HRE member, and both of them vote yay to revoking the privilegia, the PU gets broken and both are vassalized. The ruler clones himself and splits into two different rulers.

And another, seperate but useful observation:

-While under a PU, your legitimacy is determined by your senior partner's legitimacy. This means that you cannot affect it, whatever you do. This can be used to your advantage by diplo-annexing a vassal or changing your government without having to worry about the legitimacy hit.

Hope this helps anybody else who runs into the same situation!

Also, as an aside, will you lose the emperorship if you turn into a republic after proclaiming erbkaisertum? I know you wouldn't back in EU3, but looking for information about this in EU4 just brings up a single unverified claim out of many, many pages.

EDIT: Oh god I was just forced back into the bloody PU when the month turned! Despite being out of it the previous month and being able to make alliances and declare war and stuff! The Bavarians, on the other hand, have got some other monarch! Bloody hell.

And no, it wasn't just a single month, it was several- I had enough time to ally and vassalize Wallachia.

EDIT 2: So, I was eventually forced to form the Holy Roman Empire, since I couldn't declare war on the Palatinate and the PU wouldn't end by itself.

And er, I think I broke the game.

So yeah. Lesson to learn is: Do not revoke the privilegia or form the HRE when under a PU. Some things were not meant to happen.
