My two main questions? In hoi3 TFH

1) When you conquer a nation and all of the unit in that country are taken off the board including unit from that country's ally. Are they lost OR are they returned home in some fashion to that country?

2) When you are fighting enemy units and encircle one or more of them and defeat them til they are removed from the board they are not re-spawned or returned to manpower right?

Exactly.

First of all, units in overseas holdings, you haven't taken already, stay where they are (eg French ships based in Britain will remain with Free France upon Vichy). Expeditionary units should despawn, while it's allies will stay, occupy some land and need extra care.

re. division eliminated in a "kedle": isnt it so that in addition to loosing a division the owner looses officers /leaders i.e they are deducted from ur pool ?

Leaders will return to the pool - the units including all their officers are automatically destroyed, though. Both manpower and officers invested in this unit is completely lost.

Commanders of divisions or HQs which are overrun or surrounded and defeated are destroyed along with the unit. I've lost a couple of commanders that way, including several submarine commanders lost at sea when the last sub in the group was sunk. Units which are "shattered" return to their capital, along with the commander.

Normally, when units are destroyed in the game, they are disassembled into "1"s and "0"s, and put back into the box to be rebuilt into fresh digital troops when you start up another game. I understand that it makes a real mess if all those millions or billions of "1"s and "0"s ever leak out of your computer.

Has this changed recently? Last I checked, naval commanders are the ONLY form of commander who is permanently lost if what they are commanding is destroyed.

That was my understanding as well. If we were wrong about that, I am seriously interested in hearing the details.

So let me make sure that I understand. If I am playing Germany and I surround 20 soviet units and destroy them and they are removed from the map. Both the man power and commanders are lost to the soviets. Correct?

The manpower and officers are lost. If General Smackinov was leading them, however, he *should* get returned to USSR's "general pool".

The manpower and officers are lost.

Yes, with ground units the manpower is lost and leaders are not, but the officers survive as they are never part of a unit to begin with. Officers are always part of the officer pool and the officer ratio is derived from the need brigades generate versus that pool.

Belay my last. Quickly went and ran a test to validate/invalidate this. The officers are indeed lost when units are destroyed:eek:o

How many? The 100% paper requirement, or in proportion to your current officer ratio?

He is. Even generals embarked on wiped fleets survive magically. Unless he's a naval general, there's no mechanic to kill him, besides the prescripted death_date most generals have.

Careful with this date. If the general is *currently alive* when it passes, he will stay alive. The date is only referenced if you are starting a game later than 1936; if the start date of the game is after the general's death date, he won't be present.

I've adjusted the game to go to well beyond the 1948 end date in some cases... trust me, I don't lose all my generals before I've finished conquering Haiti :)

Nice to know. I, too, thought the death date would remove a leader. Thanks:)
