I've got Rome Gold, playing as Macedonia and seeing envoys come and go like crazy with no indication of where they've disappeared to or why I can't use them as envoys any more. If I send someone out on a diplomatic mission and they fail it, does that result in them being fired or killed?

I really wish there was a guide that came with Rome Gold.

They just return to your country, you can use them again if you need to. If you've sent an intrigue mission (assassination, etc), then there's a chance that your character has gotten caught and has been imprisoned or killed. If this has happened, then you will get a notification about it.

When you send a diplomatic mission, the game chooses the character with the highest Charisma rating. If you want to send a specific character, click on a country's province, click the "Diplomacy" button ("S" is the keyboard shortcut) and go from there. You can select your own envoy of choice that way.
