What happens if you capture Rome as a non-Christian?

In the past Pope would be in "off-map Rome" even if Christianity was wiped out completely, still calling crusades from the Italian mountains like a cool guerilla pope. I don't know whether it is fixed in the current version, though.

The pope always exists, even if he is unlanded. A non-Christian taking Rome will trigger crusades to unlock, if they haven't already started. The AI tends to prioritize Rome highly when selecting crusade targets. The pope also likes to demand Christian kings reclaim his lands in exchange for a coronation.
Pretty certain its an instant trigger for crusades if they haven't been already, and pretty much every crusade will target it until a Christian holds it. (IIRC it has the highest target weight by a serious margin)

Also, if Rome isn't retaken soon, a Catholic AI ruler will sometimes give the Papacy lands elsewhere. At least that what I remember from past campaigns.
It doesn't work any more. It was fixed, specifically, in Holy Fury.
Crusades are quite survivable. I had a Cathar HRE game, and though it was tedious to crush French or Spanish armies every generation, it merely meant that I would not declare major wars when it was that time of the century.
Do Pagans have the option of burning down the cathedrals of Rome or is that only reserved for the reconquering Byzantine Emperor?
Capturing Rome as reformed Hellenic pagans didn't do anything special, and neither did dedicating the temple holding to Jupiter.
When I usurped the title to the Papal States, however, I got a special event and the title changed to "Kingdom of Romagna", with the symbol being a red bird-thing on a beige background.

Unfortunately, there is no Gorilla culture or trait yet, unless there's some mod I don't know about.If Animal Kingdoms is enabled, maybe there can even be a gorilla pope?
