I've been reading some user comments and there's very many negative comments. Many are basically saying the game is "unplayable".

So what kind of problems are there?

In HOI2 (vanilla) I was mostly disappointed by the AI's inability to do amphibious landings. I never saw any D-day style landings in Europe and I never saw USA take any pacific islands from Japan. Is this problem still prevalent in HOI3?

No, its not that bad. It is not unplayable. I am playing it now. Hence the claim is disproven. It does have issues though. It may take 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and maybe an expansion or two to make it "perfect". But it is definitly playable.

Some do have major issues with the ahistorical outcomes of letting the AI loose from a 1936 start, but I reckon thats a trade off from a 1936 start. Stuff happens.

He is definitively playable, but there is still bugs that will be fixed - we all hope - with the next patch...

Nah its not bad, it's quite good. There are just some parts that are not as good as the rest of the game, so they kinda stand out.

A lot of problems exist with HoI3 and some like CTDs/freezes and snail like speeds do make game play impossible. Generally those problems seem to happen some time during or after '41 and some people have no such issues so it's something you have to try out for yourself.

In terms of issues that make the game worth playing well, that depends upon what you expect. If you are like me and you want something that has all the functionality and realism of HoI2 I think you'll be disappointed. If you are happy with the new features and are not too concerned about AI that acts in a plausible fashion you'll love HoI3. For me the supply system is a terrible hassle that frequently doesn't work, the diplomatic system is so irrational and problematic that I uninstalled the game. AI for puppets, allies, the far east and a few other areas vary from absurd to frustrating beyond belief. The game is more detailed and not nearly as intuitive as HoI2 and some of the new features are tedious to use and much harder to learn then was the case with HoI2. I really don't like the map in that it's tougher to get the info I want and not as easy to interact with as was the HoI2 map.

Given that PI seems to think that the game is basically fine and the up coming patch will seemingly be the last one I can't say I think that that HoI3 will ever be as rewarding as HoI2. Still, some people here love everything that PI does and think that the game was fine from day one so obviously "your millage may very". I suggest you play it for a few weeks on someone else's machine that is comparable to your own before buying it.

Another thread about that. That must be the 3rd about the same topic just in one thread page...:)
In HOI2 (vanilla) I was mostly disappointed by the AI's inability to do amphibious landings. I never saw any D-day style landings in Europe and I never saw USA take any pacific islands from Japan. Is this problem still prevalent in HOI3?
Still there. With Japan most of the time not able to beat China, US AI stacking hundreds of divisions in Washington,...

Some do have major issues with the ahistorical outcomes of letting the AI loose from a 1936 start, but I reckon thats a trade off from a 1936 start. Stuff happens.
That is reducing the many issues big time! If you read the comments, that problem is almost never listed anymore, since many have given up about this. And I would add there is a difference between ahistorical and the fantasy this game is producing... ;)

If you can play with allied countries running separate wars, incompentent AI, broken naval combat, still not fixed supply system..., then this game is great...
But Paradox will probably end up making it a great game, after many patches and expansions. Why would they try and release a finished product from day one? That would be "learning from past mistakes".

No, its really not bad.

The entire thing (dont call it a game) is fubar.

-Is it funny that countrys not at war annex regions after surrender?
Did Carriers or there escorts ever search for close combat?

-Why the hell i need to close screens for settings take an effect? (was ok on mainframes in the 70's in text-mode of course)

- did real units after crossing some retreating enemy units and taking 0-1 losses take a rest for some days and discussing what was happening?

- whats wrong with an development team not having an actual todo/not done list for months with an patch in test? (hint @PI: buy you some jira at least)

just some examples...

now, make your choice how good it is

Yes, its playable. I like this game much.

But, it is true that patch 1.4 is indeed necessary.

If you want to improve the game I can recommend the mods "AI improvement pack and DiDay's Unique Units".

Both mods work very well. I have been playing these mods with my mate many hours without any problems.

The ai is improved notedly.

Really that bad - no I guess not, but it is deeply flawed.

What is particularly annoying is many of these flaws are flaws older versions did not have - or even worse - flaws never propoerly addressed since HoI v1.

The greatest weakness is the AI being most definietly dumber than HoI2.

There may be reasons for this, but that is a particularly depressing feature.

The game is ok if you are looking for a "sandbox" game. If you are looking for a strategically plausible WW2 game, you might not like it as much.

There are no technical troubles on my pc. Not one ctd since the first patch.

I saw Japan getting kicked out of China/Manchuria/Korea and later Indochina (the vichy event) and Siam (when Siam became puppet event) bby the Chinese. Supply problem.

But the Yanks did well. They landed by themselves. Took the peninsula. Germans counterattacked and drove them back to one port. Then the Yanks came roaring back and cleared out the peninsula again.

Its not that its that bad its just that its not good. Without some serious
fixes it may be playable (like an harmonica) but certainly is not a good playable
(like an orchestra). The idea of gaming is to waste time happily playing a fun game,
not just to waste time.

On the US landings in a number of games they always appear to land at
Brest and often more than once. They always get slaughtered eventually
as they cannot supply an army thru those ports long enough that is strong
enough to survive. Just a larger version of what happens to Canada on
their suicide single nation invasion of the German coast i have seen a few times.

It is flawed, so much so that I would not recommend it in its current form to non-HOI afficionados, but would recommend it with a big cigarette packet sized health warning to those who are.

This game has pretensions to greatness: with time, it could quite possibly be the greatest grand stategy game.

That would take:

  • at least 1 patch to clean up the game killing issues (I suspect that ultimately, 2 or 3 patches will be needed)
  • an add-on to refine the UI, OOB, Map and add some scenarios
  • and some decent mods, particularly an historical event mod for the many of us who hate it all kicking off in 1936, and your favourite country ruling Europe by 1939 :).

So I guess we are talking 1-2 years if PI are prepared to continue investing in it, and not cut and run early for HOI4.

Personaly I think Hearts of Iron III is avesome game.

One thing should be noted though, this game is not easy one to manage as announced, especialy in order to deliver proper results.

For instance I played Germany,I go historicaly as possible and made "casual" arrangement using AI mostly diplomacy, inteligence, polithics .. and composing my army quickly just to get my recreation of WW2 combat on battlefields. Than started war with Poland,of cpurse ahistoricaly becouse of my neglection of diplomacy and Inteligence. It gone slowly, badly for my army and perspectives of continuation the game looked chaotical to me.

Than I started another ,same game.I spend hours literaly to manage all assets of the game, for instance compose armies and place commanders to their place meticuluosly taking care where commanders in army hierarchy will show their potencial. This next game of mine is totaly different. I choosed trough polithical gameplay that WW" starts on 1-st of september 1939.My prepared armies were arranged and placed awaiting orders to GO!
My Wehrmacht is smashing anything that oposes him.

My meticuluosly arranged blocks of armed forces I upgrade, move and manage with joy now.

Every my unit has its"individuality".

For instance what a joy is to track combat history of my elite panzerkorps under Guderian.

So game is hard to play if someone wants quick dinamic campaigns.

But slow clever and meticulous designing of affairs in game is enormous joy for me.

Simply,HOI III cant be played quickly as HOI II.Forget promisses about game being suitable for part-time strategians.
Its game ONly for hardcore strategians.

Personaly if some HYPOTHETIC addon will add aditional chain of command for Airforce and Navy HOI III will be perfect.

So ,after dealing with lags and CTD problems and after learning how to play, and to play patiently,is that HOI III is allmost certaily BEST GAME EVER MADE (for hardcore strategians).

No, it's not bad. It has its issues but it's a good game overall. And issues can be solved by further patches.
