Casualty rates that make no sense. For example in HOI3 you might only loose 2300 men in very long battle of Stalingrad. Usually when Blitzkrieking in vanilla you would only loose 23 or so men per battle.
I don`t want battle of Kursk be over becouse i lost 20 men and run out of organisation... i want battle of Kursk to be over when i have lost 1 000 000 men plus enemy casualties.
Nothing breaks immersion to me as much as seeing those love casualty rates. You have 5 panzer divisions, 10 infantry, 2 militia, and you only loose 200 men in 1945 battle that lasts 2 months.... Not cool.

Note that some numbers may be little off, but i hope you understand the point.

What I said is that I don't know how I feel about a videogame that simulates war.
Never mentioned the word 'prevent'.

I honestly don't see what's so strange about it.
Look, little kids have always and always will play war games of some kind, no matter how peaceful their lives have been. Animals of many kind, for example dogs, have fun with their toys by "hunting" it and trying to kill it. So clearly everybody understands difference between playful game and reality and any war games that simulate WW2 or other wars are as innocent as any other things you did as small child. I can`t see anything wrong about people having fun by making pixels kill each other. Nobody enjoys it becouse they are thinking "i just killed somebody, hoorayh". Everybody enjoys it just like they enjoyed their toys as kids.
Also less people were killed by strategy games that simulate war than real football sport. Football and other sports have caused plenty of riots or violence, but games that simulate war have only caused pain to keyboards and some monitors.

I would say it is great that you are thinking is it right to play game that simulates war. But luckily almost universally people who know stuff about games say there is nothing wrong with videogames, even when they simulate violence and war, and besides lack of physical exercise etc it is no worse than Football.
I hope you either realize there is nothing wrong with games that simulate war, or provide some new evidence or point of view etc. that has not been noticed/discussed before, even by people (many scientists/researchers) who are far more intelligent than many.
Have a good day, or preferably, good decade or more. :)

Then don't play it !
So many games exists without any links to war.

Wtf? I'm not saying that I'm against it or anything. I'm simply saying that having fun (and I have lots of it) playing something that simulates war is one of the things that might get me "out of the mood".

Thanks for your reasonable answer :)
Of course everybody sees the difference between reality and gaming. I'm in no way saying "war videogames = real war".

I will give you a tiny example. One of the games series I enjoyed the most was Brothers in Arms. Probably 99% of the fun factor was because of gameplay mechanics, but one tiny bit of it was the atmosphere and immersion you had when you realized these were reproduction of real people, real lives, real tragedies etc. When I was playing I used to ask myself what these people (that is, the real actual soldiers from either side) would think of me if they knew I was playing them and having fun in a reproduction of something that for most of them must have been nothing more and nothing less than a trauma.

I'm not saying anyone shouldn't play violent videogames, ffs, I'm the first in line playing them. I'm simply saying that the more accurate the reproduction, the closer we get, and the closer we get, the more fun I have and the more uncomfortable I feel.

Good day to you too! :)

Well many war veterans of old are divided about it, but i recommend googling what war veterans think about video games, you get some pretty interesting articles about it. One war veteran i am reading about talks about how he still loves violent video games about war, even though he is unable to play them much due to memories. That is pretty strong statement in favor of video games being just fine, even when war veteran can not play video game becouse of his memories, he still likes them and thinks they are perfectly fine.
Of course there will be many opinions. I also recommend watching "elders play video games" videos, it shows old people who have never played anything enjoying video games just like kids are. No idea if any of them happened to be in any wars, but elders stereotypically think more negatively about video games, so it tells something. And of course, elders have far more experience in everything, if not war itself.

2. Luckily AI control of armies should work so much better in HOI4 that you can use it to capture those islands and you can avoid that frustration :)
3. Yeah, i get that also. But then i realize i could invade Poland again :D

@Victor Cortez Certainly, you can choose to play any game by your personal preference :)

Maybe I wasn't effective in asking how you'd come to your point of view. Certainly everyone is entitled to their own preference.

Which ideology prevents playing a game, even ones where tens of millions may die? I would much rather us as a species play many, many war games rather than actually clash in fighting.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but Victor was just sharing his personal feelings and thoughts (which can be an ideology), and they're perfectly reasonable. Victor didn't suggest anyone else should have them, he was just sharing his thoughts, that were totally on-topic :).

Personally, I enjoy the challenge of wargames, and find it and the history enthralling, but I also have moments when I reflect on the paradox (boom boom :)) between very much enjoying military history and games based on it, but wanting a world free from war.

On topic, as for HoI4, other than ensuring important stuff is taken care of (gaming is a hobby, so life has to take preference and all that), there's not much that'll stop me getting excited for HoI4, although Stellaris looks to be a good distraction, and I'm enjoying Mare Nostrum at the moment as well, and there's always Rule the Waves :).
