Reading about basically any area in the world in this era tends to make me want to play the game.
It's hard not to get sidetracked into adding stuff though.

I find myself having a hard time finding reasons not to start new games.
However, if inspiration is needed, listening to good old Prussian marches tends to do the trick.

Mostly hunting achievements, it gives me a goal to achieve. Harder achievements are especially interesting. I also like to try some new mechanics in new expansions and idea groups - or combinations of them and policies.

I'd like to see idea groups changed much more often and the changes to be more significant. They don't need to be perfectly balanced, one patch some ideas would be better, the other you nerf those op ideas and buff weaker ones. This way some games like DOTA work great and always feel fresh.

What i really don't like is having to restart many times some difficult starts - it kind of kills my will to play. There are quite a few of these, Theodoro, Tabarestan and similar.

Indeed I fell in love with Prussia after learning of the 7 years war and Sweden much the same in the 30 years war.

I really like playing a different style each game.
Right now playing Prussia and waging war as often as possible. But I already look forward to playing The Palatinate without grabbing any land and just influencing others.

Playing Austria was fun as hell, just marrying everybody and everywhere and not starting any war by myself. :)

I then read a lot about the nation I am playing and learning stuff.

When playing big nations (once played Ottomans and Castile) and just expanding as hell (by war with the Ottomans and by owning 90% of the colonizationable world with Castile) is fun at the start but rather routine in the end with lots of micromanagement. Afterwards I am fed up with the game and don't play for weeks.

Generally I do not play in summer. This break rebuilds the fun playing nights in winter.

This is freaky, are you alternate me from the future? :p (Since I only have ~950 hours. :))

I find what gets me going is achievements, especially ones likely to take most of a campaign to finish as I like to play fully through to 1821 most of the time. So I like chaining together achievements to see how many I can achieve in one run, which might mean picking a specific country within a broader region. (I think my most so far was as Castille->Spain in 1.17 where I got something like 7 or 8, including 3 related to the HRE that I hadn't planned on at all in the beginning. :D)

Haha, I am kind of from the future: living in New Zealand, so I am probably 12hours ahead of you IRL... I also can fully relate to your take on achievements and playing until 1821. There are a few I simply constantly have available, but never got so far, because either "me stupid", "me impatient" or prioritizing other achievements. White Company is one, a decent reserve another one, trustworthy always sits around, coring india as european nation and few more. I am currently contemplating to start one of the following campaigns this week (finished last weekend: Aragon> Consulate of the Sea > forming Spain > forming Roman Empire):
  1. Portugal with the aim to achieve "trustworthy" and "coring india" as priorities (can't even remember the exact name) and possibly "White Company";
  2. Bohemia aiming for "The Bohemians" and the ones mentioned before;
  3. Naples aiming for "Naples = Great Power" Achievement (probably the easiest);
  4. never played in Japan...;
  5. trying France for "BBB" (I have the "Better than Napoleon"). Problem is: I have even more ideas for what I'd like to try, but can't decide yet, lol!

I'd like to try Jihad (Najd > 500 Sunni provinces). But given the fact, that I prefer kind of tall-play, I might just end up and taking Naples or Portugal. Plus: I am heavily favoring European nations.

The topic was asking for "what gets us kicking for EU4" and I forgot to mention that I am trying to play for score as well - as silly as it might be, but I use it to benchmark my own campaigns a little bit.

Thank you, OP, for such an interesting thread.

My AP world and US history classes can sometimes get me going when class stops being boring and we do an interesting activity. Learning about the Virginia colony got me going on an England game lately(ps shout out to the m/t team and their almost completed population overhaul once that comes out I'll be okay in the shit out of this game again)

LOL! The Traditional Player one is my curse too! I can't be bothered paying attention to/actively playing for Navy Tradition (i.e. corresponding Idea Groups) and I feel that this is so damn hard. This would also require me to read up about Navy Tradition... The Protected Market one I did not find in particular difficult as I simply decided in one campaign to boost Mercantilism strictly with dip-points + Papal Influence points + events from taking Trade Ideas, if I recall correctly. Was probably a huge waste, but for whatever good reason, back when I did it: I didn't care about wasting MP.

As I'm a history teacher (at least by title) sometimes I remember names of important people or random wars that I read about in college, them read about them in wikipedia or a similar source and spend hours adquaring more knowledge about the matter and somethimes an idea apears...

"What if I do that in [insert paradox game related to the period/character/war]?" :rolleyes:

Last month I read a lot about Frederick the Great and ended doing a brandenburg>Prussia campaing... before that I was investigating something about the army of the Eastern Roman Empire and ended up playing Crusader Kings II...

Now I'm reading about the Balkan League and the first and second balkan war... (resisting the temptation of reinstaling Victoria II >.< )
