This is just a topic to speculate wildly on what the next Paradox Interactive game will be.

With their two most lucrative properties, Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis, recently released, they will likely be flush with cash to fund a new project (maybe they'll even be able to afford a forum search tool!). Unfortunately, it can't be one based on either of their two hottest series.

Of course, an HOI3 expansion or two is to be expected, but this can hardly keep Paradox busy for too long. Victoria 2 or CK 2 seems a little unlikely, especially the former, given its tepid reception. Of course, both are possible. Rome 2 is equally improbable, given that Rome was just a minor spin-off of EU3 basically.

What seems most likely to me would be an entirely new game. Yes, sounds strange perhaps, but that's what I think! Now, that's not to say a new era necessarily - Pre-Roman times and the Dark ages, the only eras left unexplored by paradox, are both relatively unalluring. A modern day game is possible, but has a variety of competition with significant overlap (including Geopolitical Simulator and Supreme Ruler).

I think that Paradox might go for something of a different scope - say a war game that focuses on just one theatre, or even some sort of tycoon simulator (albiet on a scale that puts others to shame).

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and in a few months they'll be announching Victoria 2.

What do you think?

Victoria was a highly innovative game, and I'd love to see them take a second shot at it.

Agreed. I'd love to see them develop the concept of a nineteenth century geopolitical/economic simulator beyond Victoria's niche market, and I'm hoping HoI3's pending success will give the financial resources to do it properly.

Pre-Roman times and the Dark ages, the only eras left unexplored by paradox, are both relatively unalluring.

I think this assumes something about the market that just might not be true...but certainly can't be taken as fact based on one opinion. There are few games covering either era, partially due to a lack of historical context (we know less about those eras) and also because people might not enjoy recreating what are perceived as backward periods of history--like a wargame set in WWI, who wants to play in a period known mostly for stagnation?

Still there are a few great games set in, say, ancient Egypt, bronze-age Greece or early Mesopotamia that give a hint at what kind of game could be made from those times: imagine grand strategy of building a civilization in the Nile valley, leading Assyrian armies to challenge the walls of Babylon, or assembling the Persian empire like Cyrus the Great. If Paradox wants to apply itself to a new period of history, they can create a definitive ancient-history simulation that existing efforts from companies like Slitherine and Tilted Mill have barely begun to approach.

Still, I'd be interested more in what THEY come up with next, since I've been pleased by the variety of eras & topics they've addressed. Before HOI appeared, I would never have thought that the people behind EU would do so well re-creating WWII--but here we are today, breathlessly awaiting it's third incarnation.

Maybe they could go for a space sim. Galactica Universalis, perhaps?

Alternatively, they could stick to historical settings, but change things up a bit. While I love the map setup PI uses for its flagship titles, I'd like to see a title that is grand strategic in scope, but utilizes radically different gameplay. After all, EU and HOI were unique and groundbreaking when they first come out, and to my knowledge PI has carved out an as-of-yet unchallenged niche in computer gaming. If any company could come out with something revolutionary again, it would be them. Barring expansion packs, once Hoi3 comes out, the PI lineup will be relatively complete. Assuming sales are brisk there is no reason to rush out another major title, so why not take some time and come up with another truly inventive game?

Well, games take years to go from beginnings of work in earnest to final release. We'll be fed some expansions for a while, sure, but there's no doubt that whatever PI's next major project is, it's already begun. Unless something goes really wrong for them and they have to scrap a lot of progress, we'll have it within 2 years.

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see something with an economic focus.

I liked Victoria, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't up to the standard of either EU2 (which I personally prefer to EU3, though that's good too) or HOI2.
Re-approaching it from a different direction (ditch POPs) could create a great new experience.

This thread has preciously little to do with HOI3, really...

And I'm sure you can find a thread on this subject in the OT without too much effort.
