Good evening, mighty community.

Although I played quite a bit with Hearts of Iron, I feel pretty little in front of the complexity of EU2.

I initially started a grand campaign playing France. I soon noticed large armies (especially ugly Brits) wreaking havoc among my provinces withtout really knowing what to do.

The Tutorial proved to be useful to some extent but still : I've no real clue as to how I should prioritize things that need to be done.

Would you suggest that I start a game with a less intricate political situation ? What path(s) should I take to neatly learn the basics while having fun ?

Thanks for your time.

A good starter is Muscovy in the Age of Explorations scenario. You'll soon turn into Russia and get plenty of training in land warfare. Later on you can colonize Siberia and grow big and ugly :D

Then you could try Spain in the same scenario - lot's of colonisation and navy training (watch your back in Europe...)

Agh you darn frog (eye for an eye)
I was going to say England as they are so very easy especially on... well easy.
Austria are good and pretty war free, the major spanish nation (forgot its name) should also be pretty easy- I found it easy starting as Aragon so it should be childs play as the other one.

I don't think Muscovy would be too good, attrition confused me a bit as a newbie and those revolts around 1600ish....

When I first played Europa Universalis, I was, just like you, overwhelmed by the game's complexity. France in the GC is not the ideal starting country since you begin in quite a difficult situation, fighting the English and Burgundy and you will later have to cope with a lot of different things. I'd therefore suggest you to practice each specific part of the game with a country particularly appropriate for that, i.e.:

First play a nice peaceful diplomatic game as Austria to learn diplomacy and peaceful expansion. Stay out of big wars, don't annex too many catholics, get elected emperor everytime and wait for your inheritances (Burgundy in 1477, Milan in 1499, Hungary and Bohemia in 1526). You don't have to do much and can see how the game environment develops around you.

Next, learn the colonial part of the game, ideally with Portugal. Don't bother entering European wars or diplomacy, build up a huge colonial and trade empire instead, discover the whole world, conquer some pagan or Indian countries.

Then, go for a pure warmonger. Ottomans are the perfect choice, Muscovy/Russia is also good. Annex all your core provinces and any other valuable province you can grab and learn to deal with rebellions, war exhaustion, bb wars and a multi-cultural and multi-religious empire.

And finally, take a not more difficult, but more complex nation that has to deal with all of the mentioned areas, e.g. England, Spain and England for another easy game or Sweden, Denmark or Brandenburg for more of a challenge.

1492 France is pertty easy...seeing as how your french Id play them.

You learn some diplomacy (brittany annex...get a few german allies) you'll get some colonization and you will get plenty of war...but your army should be able to handle it (they dont put up the white flag and run in this game)

LoL Josquius.

Thanx a lot to you all for your quick answers.

I'll indeed follow Twoflower's guidelines. When I'm done, I'll eventually prevent the infamous contagion of English (i.e British, whatever) influence from spreading over the green pastures of Burgundy, Aquitaine, and so on and so forth.

As for Imperial Army's last tease, I shall say : "the dribble of the brown toad doesn't reach the green frog".

Yeah. Whatever this means, really.

Hi and bienvenue :)

I think a good country to start with would be Austria as it isn't too big in the beginning so that you'll be able to learn progressively. You'll get bigger and bigger and will be able to try the various dimensions of the game (religion, events, lot of diplomacy, maybe a bit of colonyzation at the end...)

Enjoy!

I dont suggest Austria....the gold inflation will tick him off. The otts can end up wiping the floor with him and its a real boring game around 1480...

Austria might be a bit too tough with the 1.06 rules, but he can always move into Germany quickly to reduce the % of gold in his total economy. I think Austria in 1492 is a good nation to pick since they're reasonably powerful and you don't have to worry too much about colonization.

I say France 1492. A little colonization, a little land battle experience, a little naval battle experience. Nice tax rate and a seemingly endless pool of manpower. You also have a CoT. Ottoman Empire could be good to, lots of conquest practice.

I would agree.

France 1492 is one of the strongest nations in the game and that would make it possible to survive almost intact even when making some mistakes

Try the United States in the Napolean's Ambition scenario. I have always felt that it is the best starting game for a new player.

You have a rich COT, CB's on all the native tribes, and Europeans, many events, some fair leaders, the ability to be an excellent trading nation and can play at your own pace.
