To be fair, Byzantium fell to a combination of factors that might've just as easily be avoided. To be also fair, the Ottomans were in luck that nations bordering them had weak/non-functioning/dying governments. Whenever they hit anything resembling a serious country - they were stopped real hard. People, including DDRJake, are quick to bash Byantium just because it apparently is cool to do so. I, personally, don't find it that amusing. It was, after all, a country that thrived and survived for almost 2000 years.

To answer the original question, Byzantium has enough intereting mechanics as is, especially now that it got the new Orthodox features as well. I think a special government feature would be over the top, especially compared to important nations like France or Spain that have jack tbh.
I agree other countries are of more importance, that's why this thread saves them the time of thinking things up.

Not a whole dlc but a small part of a larger one and Byzantium might be more popular than Aq Qoyunlu or Qara Qoyunlu witch have unique governments.

A load of maluses to represent the fact that the Empire was literally falling apart at that point. If Byzantium was to get any special gov.form; it would need to be a bad form to represent their outdated Empire system.

Also to trigger the Byzantophiles.

Seems a lot of people just want Byzantium to die already and are sick of the vocal minority demanding Byzantium buffs. Just my two cents here.

But a serious suggestion, they do rather need a unique government which lets them marry into other religions in spite of Christian. This is how they survived for as long as they did. This same government would also be given to Theodoro and Trebizond (as well as any of the releaseable Byzantium rump-states like Morea).

Byzantium also needs an event chain where if Constantinople falls but the rest stays intact, the Empire should probably become Morea and/or gain the ability to give Ottomans a truce with them as long as they continue to pay tribute. Perhaps reflect it by adding them as a tributary of the Ottomans by event. Make the AI Byzantium prone to refusing tribute (to reflect the inability to pay it historically) to cause the Ottomans to inevitably crush them. Although a crafty player may find a better solution to the Turkish problem...

I mean, I can’t really knock you too much for trying considering I’ve suggested a unique US government, but I don’t feel Byzantium really warrants a unique government. Not only does it almost always die, but I can’t imagine it being so different from the catch-all standard monarchies that we have available now. At the very best, maybe some unique base modifiers... but mechanics? Nah.

Tbh why would the Byzantines need new mechanics? Everyone knows the Ottomans are the real successors to Rome.
Also Romania and Russia.

Byzantium, at least last time EU4 stats got released, is the 12th most popular tag to play as. Notable countries ahead of them that don't get unique mechanics are France, Castille, Portugal, Austria, and Sweden. I don't think it'd be unreasonable to see new mechanics for Byzantium, at least purely basing it around their popularity, though I'd probably want to see French or Austrian mechanics if I were to pick.

I would like only accepted cultures to be monarchs as that in 1000+ years only Greeks and Armenians were emperors.

Incorrect. If you are saying the Byzantine Empire is over 1000 years in span, then you are including plenty of non-Greek/Armenian Emperors.

The most obvious are the Justinianic Dynasty, who were either Illyrian or Thracian, and spoke Latin as their first tongue. Very much not Greek.

The Isaurians were of uncertain ancestry.

Hell, in 1204, the Byzantines were willing to crown Franko-Italian Boniface as Emperor, and he would have been recognized as legitimate by them (too bad it didn’t work out and the City got sacked instead.

Kinda depends on how they got the calculation for "popular". If it's just new games started with the tag, that number could be wrong just because how often you have to restart for a proper game.

God.

No.

Byzantium already has a DLC and isn't close to being popular enough to merit a second.

But the vocal minority who like to play the Purple Carcass with one hand don't quit, do they?

I'm pretty sure Byzantium is one of the most played nations, probably up there with the majors like France, Sweden, Brandenburg, Ming, Burgundy and such. Basileus, despite being relatively hard of an achievement, is more commonly earned than The Spice Must Flow, Sweden Is Not Overpowered and Luck of the Irish, much easier achievements for rather popular nations. It's also a measly 0.3% less earned than Definetely the Sultan of Rum, and it's less than a percent less earned than A Fine Goosestep and A Kaiser Not Just In Name - three other achievements that aren't particularly hard and are for euromajors.

One "DLC" should be enough for them, but the "DLC" is a set of a few events that just gives/lowers your MPs sporadically that is completely through RNG, totally uncontrollable by the player, as well as a unit pack that is arguably one of the worst around. That and the fact the entire balkans look absolutely horrifying in the current patch should, in my view, warrant at least a minor patch (like 1.19 was for Denmark) boosting the region. A major DLC, I believe would be better placed in Western Europe, for while borders there aren't atrocious, most of these nations have pretty damn bland gameplay - notably Portugal and Castile.

And besides, a DLC doesn't have to necessarily make it easier. For one, Mandate of Heaven vastly improved the mechanics in Japan, despite the globally criticized fiasco in China. Despite this, gameplay as a Daimyo actually got marginally harder as the Shogun can now DOW you, take your generals, murder your kings, and invading Ryukyu/Korea after unification can be troublesome due to the Ming. They could very well rework the region and perhaps throw in more for what our money's worth (since they already removed the imperial government from the original DLC) while still changing the factors around to make the run harder, such as adding new balkan provinces in Ottoman bulgaria, greece and macedonia, granting them a power buff.

They should get Varangian guards as a unique unit i feel.

Edit:But lets do one better and make a unique government when you reform the roman empire? lol
Varangian guard in 1444?
They could share A government form they are the same thing after all.
This is an over-simplification imho, is the anglo-saxon kingdom of Wessex the same thing as the Great Britain of the 21th century? Anyway, why so many people are so convinced that the Byzantine Empire was the "same thing" of the empire of Augustus? Isn't not so correct from an historical perspective imho.

I agree with that, indeed they are still a minor who is important for an historical perspective, and some rework is always welcome.
