I agree the '48 assembly is a huge event impacting immigration or dangerous state forming in germany. Wisconsin, Texas, and Californina wouldn't be the same without 1848 immigration though.
My history on the subject is a little rusty but, ideally things could go a couple of different ways such as Prussia accepting the crown from that assembly.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how Paradox modelled that event.
Accepting the crown would definitely be something, especially for players bent on changing history. However it should come at a high price in stability and it should greatly diminish your prestige abroad and at home among the conservative factions. Back then you couldn't just accept any crown that the commoners offered to you, at least not if you were a King of Prussia, ruling over an army with a state attached to it. You were the sovereign by the grace of god, not by the grace of the mob. Accepting the crown from the hands of liberal professors should totally blast you towards liberalism, vastly reduce your power, weaken your Prussian military spirit, set you at odds with the French, Austrians and Russians (with the French because you unite Germany and with the others because you offer encouragement to the insolent liberals)... essentially, put you in all the perils that the unification under Bismarck did, but offer you none of the short term benefits.
It took Bismarck quite a bit of persuading to get Wilhelm I to accept the Imperial crown in 1871, and that was after winning a war and being offered the crown from the hand of the German princes, not the rabble. They were so medieval in their mindsets...
The long term benefits, however, should be nice. Progressive social policies, economic unification and prosperity, a surge in national pride... after you overcome the initial troubles and the attempts from the Prussian aristocracy to sabotage your enlightened reform proposals. And just maybe Austria will fly apart sixty years early... after all, you uniting the German nation under the liberal banner might give the Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Poles and various others ideas right when the Habsburg Empire is in a period of instability.
