I ask this because I would really like to see an AI that works. There are many issues but the one that peeved me the most was how the ai scatters units all over the map willy nilly without regard for where the hq's are. I could go on but I am sure you are aware of the glaring deficiencies of the old engine. I just want to know if the issues will be dealt with or not.

It's on the new Clauswitz engine, and in reference to recent games the AI should be improved a lot.

They (the publishers and developers) always claim the AI has improved. Usually it's a lie.

...and here I always thought the key to a good AI was all about hiring a former Mr. Universe to go back in time and kill the mother of the leader of human resistance. Learn something everyday.

One thing I wish is for people to STOP comparing EU AI with HOI AI. It is way different. There are no planes in EU. There are just 3 land types and that is a rock paper scissor AI. EU AI is way way easier then a HOI AI would be. With all the different units and terrain it gets way more complex.

Not to put EU down but if I program a great Risk AI doesn't mean the AI for another more complex game will be good.

The task facing the programmers is big. They need a naval AI, air AI, land AI, cooperative air/naval/land AI, cooperative country AI, strat warfare AI and invasion AI. Not to mention the standard economy, diplomacy, espionage etc AI's.

EU is 10% war, 90% other stuff. HOI is 90% war 10% other stuff. And that is why the HOI AI will be much harder to get right.

Excellent point. I see a few people acknowledge this now and again, but more people seem to look past the differences and complexities that are going to be native to a game more focused on warfare, let alone modern warfare.

Sure, the EU4 AI doesn't need to worry about aircraft and other details about warfare, but there's also a lot more things on the strategic level outside of war that it must juggle that doesn't really apply to HOI. I'm not saying getting tactical AI right in HOI4 is going to be anything less than a huge challenge, but good AI is good AI. It takes a skilled AI programmer and enough time/resources to iterate to get good, but EU4 showed that Paradox and Wiz are capable of it.

No AI in my lifetime is going to be anywhere near as good as a human, but the EU4's is good enough for the game to provide me entertainment. I have hopes that Paradox can replicate that for HOI4. :)

I think what matters is that if they managed to greatly improve the AI from HoI3 to HoI3:TFH and from EU3 to EU4, it's fairly safe to predict that HoI4 AI will be much improved from HoI3:TFH.

Out of curiosity I always thought of the engine as a graphical device not logic based, am I way off?
Well yes and no, we try to put things that might be used by several games in the engine. But still you have to separate "code" from "data" where "code" is engine and "data" might be code/etc specified in the game/project or even in a script file.
Wiz will probably have an dd about the AI in HoI and explain it all O;D

Thanks for the answer, that makes a lot of sense. Can't wait for the next DD.

And finding the time to do it well, or being given the time to do it well.

If only more time had been found back with HOD. *sigh* Love what was done though. Love it!

a

Do you meant to say then, that HOI3 could have been written so that the ai didn't scatter units hither and yon and do game ruining things if they would have had a computer programmer? All I want is a game that works properly and as advertised. There are too many things to list here but I am sure you are all to aware of really bad things that are done by the ai in HOI3. I just want a World War Two simulator that works. And I hope they pay you a lot of money if you get it right.
