When the battle has started does the units speed have any effect? Or is it just a mean of getting into battle?

I don't think that speed matters for land battles, but it must for air battles. Otherwise the speed attribute would be useless for planes.

IRL ship speed must have been crucial.

Airspeed not useless

I don't know the usefulness of shipspeed inside a battle, but I doubt it the way the naval battle engine is done. However, the airspeed does matter when you make a move between two territories that is long. If you have a distance of say 325 km, an airplane with airspeed of <325 km/h would need at least 2 hours to make it, else only 1. Not that this is crucial, but it does have some influence.

I do agree with your comment about real life.

I don't think naval battles take speed into account in the game, and I don't think they should.
It is true that speed in real life played a role, but do not confuse reality and game model.

If a ship is faster it is stronger in reality, in the game model it gets higher fighting values to represent this. No need to take speed into account any more.

If you want to model the "efficiency" of higher speeds for ships, you could give them better defensive stats.

Speed Is Armour!!

According to Jackie Fisher...

Unless you use stealth like submarines a major speed difference is important for striking fast and then running away. Also it will determine generally who gets to outmaneuver whom, cross the T or something like that.

Just my two cents,

Actually you need both speed and armor or you end like the British Battlecruisers at Jutland.

In game terms a minor bonus to efficiency might be feasible.
