What does moral authority do?

Like the title says. Who gets what kind of benefit if the moral authority of certain religion is high/low?
How is it increased or decreased except of playing with anti-popes?

I am interested in this too. But low moral authority reduces the speed of conversions (afaik) and makes some of the popes things (like excommuncation) impossible (afaik again)

IIRC low moral authority means higher probability of heresies, too.
