I just got the title of emperor of the roman empire, or whatever it is called. The one you see on the religious screen with italian and german nations within a red line.

I found it a bit curious becouse i am playing Portugal and it is around 1450, and my king Afonso got the title. At the same time the austrian king was declared as well, and he usually gets the title. I dont even have any territory within the red line.

Now i wonder what does it do?

AFAIK, 50 victory points, better BB-going-down rate, military access within the Holy Roman Empire (the red-bordered thing on religious map you mentioned), and I think some cash and manpower bonus... Correct me if I'm wrong.

you are right.

The military access is only if you at war.

And the manpower and cash boost is for every elector with which you have very good relations with.

Aha, that is interesting. It explains why i suddenly had alot more victory points. I was hoping i might have some research bonus, but it did not seem like it. I have not noticed more money though, nor any more manpower. Well, it was a nice bonus. I claimed defender of the faith soon afterwards and i read that it actually makes researches more expensive. That made me sad.

Ok, how good does that relation have to be? I am at pretty good relations with most of them.

I think it is 125 (though others say that it is 100), but you can't go wrong with 125. ;)

I thought it was 100 :).

In any case, the best part is the manpower boost, which is incredible, especially as a small country. Since as the emperor, you can have a gigantic army, and start smashing people :D. Also, the free military access is great too, since you can smash people and they generally can't get to you :p.

1st: I think you get a research bonus, I think I've seen how much it was in a FAQ

2nd:  Didn't you? I also was HRE as Portugal (I bribe the electors through) and my manpower was tremendous. :D :D :D
