I hope they just concentrate on improving WW2 with additional and better features. I don't really want cold war or ww1 time frames for a ww2 game unless its just bonus material.

Edit: plus I don't really think the engine fits the cold war time period well for 75% of requirements. Cold war is about espionage, proxy wars, terrorism, regional conflicts, and getting glassed over if things go wrong. Not full scale war.

Well, it depends on what direction they are planning to go with HoI 4.

Hearts of Iron 2 had 2 official expansions (AFAIK), Doomsday and Armageddon.
Hearts of Iron 3 had a total of 3 expansions : Semper Fi, For The Motherland, and Their Finest Hour.

If they follow earlier practices, there will be 3 - 4 expansions, and thats it. Or, maybe to make more money, they'll butcher it down to size ala EU 4 and CK 2, and before you manage to turn around, there are 10 expansions out improving specific areas of the game. I *really* hope that they'll take the former route, but i suspect (with dread) that we are in for the latter.

Only time will tell :)

Are you sure? There is a somewhat blurry line between improvements and game mechanic changes.

As for bugs: this is not a bug, this is a feature.
Expansions require big features to be included with other improvements while the patch that is usually released alongside the expansion will contain small improvements and bugfixes, balancing etc.

I hope they take the latter route so that the game will last longer like CKII has. Whereas HoI3 and Vicky2 lost dev support after 2-3 expansions.

@PlacidDragon
I'm sorry to inform you that the developers has stated that CKII/EU4-style DLC/Expansion is now considered the norm. Following the development of CKII and EU4 I think the assumption that Stellaris and HOIV will evolve in similar fashions is undisputed.

Myself, I am not alarmed at this development as I consider the business-model appropriate and benefiting for this genre. However, I am a bit concerned about the pricing of these expansion as there has been instances where I have questioned the value of the added content for other Paradox-titles. It is my hope that the two or three of the expansions will be sufficiently extensive and satisfactory enough to justify their 25€ pricing (or else the commotion on these forums will be insufferable).

I would love to see a WWI scenario as well, maybe even with the interwar timeframe (if not we still have quite a few determined modders who will try to deliver :D).

More unique National Foci (e.g. China, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania) are quite possible as well, since we get the Polish one as a day one addendum already.

Also, Cold War, hands down, would be amazing. I imagine that to be the second DLC since I think some mechanics have to be changed or at least altered in some way (maybe civil war mechanic as a base for surrogate wars [e.g. Korean war, Afghanistan] and something like that).

Or a fully functional Vicky2 (and possible 3?) to HoI4 converter. Y'know, for the true "Grand Campaign". :D

From HoI 3 release (August 2009) until the release of expansion pack 3 (Their Finest Hour, in September 2012), thats already over 3 years. I dont remember how long they supported it after the latest expansion, but it had a solid run of probably 4+ years.

CK 2 was released in February 2012. Its absolutely still alive, but it currently has 11 (thats eleven) expansions.

With Paradox announcing the expansion pack and that it will give you 2 big dlcs. Not just cosmetic packs. What do you think that these "2 big dlcs" will be?

Usually, the expansions cover mechanics that were "missing" in the base game for a lack of better words. Other than that, it expands on the current content with more historical stuff/scenarios.

Thats exactly what i am trying to wrap my head around :)

The "estimated value" of the two expansions is 49.99$

While i dont look at prices on Steam in dollars, 25 dollars strikes me as too high for a CK2 / EU 4 type of expansion (which are usually quite limited in scope and focus on mainly one area of improvement). 25 bucks would on the other hand be perfectly in line with an "old style" expansion ala "Their Finest Hour".

Are you aware they scrapped a whole game (East vs West) who would have been about Cold War ? I would be very surprised if they go back there with HOI4.

Here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_vs._West_–_A_Hearts_of_Iron_Game

Yes. I've cancelled work projects before and also lost some due to file issues. Having to restart from scratch generated very good results because of the lessons learned from the first attempts.

Maybe they'll be deterred from trying again, but all the mentions in these forums of Cold War content indicate that there's definitely a market for it.

More National Focus Trees.

possibly grouped ones like minor axis powers
Commonwealth country
Latin American
Scandinavian (possibly Finland having its own because it did alot during the war in terms of options)
Chinese or at least nationalist Chinese

Its what a lot of peoples biggest criticism has been and if you remember when EU IV cam out there was not that many national ideas but over time most country's have unique ideas now.

I personally want to see a earlier start date like 1933 or something like DH. or WW1 I doubt it will ever been anywhere past Korea for a cold war DLC the mechanics just don't suit it.

Espionage + Diplomacy
Expanded Air and Naval Warfare - Air Resupply, Troop Transport/Amphib Invasion Escorting instead of zone control, Interception prior to bombers reaching the target air zone, Naval conversions of already built ships.

That's what I'm hoping for at a minimum

...Maybe they'll be deterred from trying again, but all the mentions in these forums of Cold War content indicate that there's definitely a market for it.

There is probably a market fort it (I too would be interested), but it seems they deemed it too small to make a reasonable profit. Like for March of the Eagles (which I liked).

DLC 1: The Spy Games: introducing a more complex espionage system
DLC 2: The Pacific: unique trees/units/event for various chinese factions. Also improves some mechanics for the US/JAP war and adds to the SU/JAP skirmishes with more events/focuses regarding it
DLC 3: The Sun Never Sets: introducing unique focus trees/units/events for nations such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India
At this point I ran out of ideas
DLC 4: The "Great" Roman Empire: For historical accuracy on performance of the Italian forces they are unable to gain experience and stay as green units from now on.
DLC 5: Sweden is not overpowered: Add 300% factory output, 125% factory construction speed and 30% atk/def to all Swedish divisions.
