I think it's a testament to how poor the navy system is in EU4 that you never feel like you need one. Blockades help with sieges, but all that means is you pay a little more time or a little bit of military power to complete a coastal siege. Not significant enough to merit taking a coastal province. Plus, all that diplomatic power you save from completely deprioritizing diplo tech can be a huge boon to production development. I think I have the most fun without a navy.

Do I have a coastline?
  • Yes? Do the Knights/Maghrebis/Habsan have a coastline?
  • Yes? Remove their coastline. Go back to question 1.
  • No? What does my navy look like?
  • Nonexistant? Spam more light ships.
  • Under Naval Force Limit? Spam more light ships.
  • At Naval Force Limit? Spam more light ships.
  • Over Naval Force Limit? Spam more light ships.
  • No? Good. Spam cannons.
P.S. If someone trashes my light ship stack they better prepare to have their capital sacked.

Don't you ferl more relaxed not having to take care of the seas?
The author feels the same, when it is a bohemian rhapsody, or a hungarian dance, or in the hall of the king of tibet, or an ethiopean jazz, or a butuan beat, or more naturally, when it is a breeze from altais, flowing deep in the mongolian steppes. No time for fleets, no need for fleets.

The feeling is, serenity.

... and yet, there is also the venetian run of destiny, or the swedish homecoming ride, or the ottos' journey of the lone qayser, or la revanche du roi français, or the ancient doom-raid cycle with pirates of palembang, which give complex or simplistic, very different feelings of joy. In those cases, it is of course either get a fleet or perish.

My Bavaria to Germany save, no ships whatsoever. Pleasant save.

My Mamluks to Arabia save. Lots of ships in the Mediterranean due to vassals. But sometimes I build ships just for the missions.

In my current France save I have to build up ships because I am fighting England. But having Portugal and Spain as allies, with a decent sized fleet of my own and already holding Ireland and half of south England means that I needn't worry about ships.

I mostly build light ships to protect trade, but naval combats is a point I prefer to avoid if possible.

Actually I like the trade ship mechanics, I find it complements the trade aspect, however I completly agree that If I can avoid dealing with naval warfare the game feels much more relaxing, I do suspect tho that it is due to the fact that I don't understand naval warfare in this game.

My strat is usually build light ships and transport (5-10-25 depending on needs and FL), when u go to war hide the navy in a port with fort, when u are at peace steal the trade of the others with light ships.

Avoiding the mental gymnastic that maintaining a big heavy fleet (except late game where you swim in cash) or even worse the correct proportion between galleys/heavy ships is something that I find relaxing.

The navy game is neglected, but...

If you're playing a WC as a coloniser then don't underestimate the power of having a strong fleet than can transport men from one place to another. That and having a good fleet to protect trade. It's actually quite imprtant.

As a pirate Rugen, having a light ship flagship with the Trade Route Map and Spare Jolly Roger is hilariously OP for privateering. Mortars are also nice for +1 Fleet blockade impact on siege in coastal provinces.

Portugal also has an even better Portuguese Trade Route Map (+2 TP for every ship in the Fleet, BTW this isn't just for light ships) and Portuguese Fusiliers is great for amphibious raids,

Playing a country with no or small coastline is pretty nice. I don't feel like I ought to have a navy and just play without it.

Ships are super expensive to upgrade (and upgrading them is a DLC feature and I am gonna keep pointing it out until it's not), generally don't do much and transports are super annoying cuz you have to have a ton of them to transport a stack or half a stack and then you need something to defend them and... it's so much nicer to just say "I don't have transports, don't bother me".

Q/ What do you feel when you play nations with no sea access?

A/ That I need to expand to get sea access.;)

If the question at hand was; Do you like having more ducats? y/n, I would seriously question why people would say no.

Sure naval warfare is rather bland, but I like being able to use transports and make money with light ships. I've never particularly felt stressed about the navy aspect of the game. Either you have naval dominance, so you send boats to blockade, or you don't so you mostly build light ships and when war starts you bring what ships you do have into port. I do have major gripes and frustrations about navies in the game, but that has never made me want to not have a navy at all.

I do enjoy not having to micromanage navies.

Unfortunately, all the best trade nodes are located on the coast and having naval superiority, while not always necessary, does make things easier.

I'm sure I saw a post somewhere of someone playing switzerland conquering every non coastal province or something.
