As I understand it the benefit of league members and trading cities is purely for the stacking effects. So you should snatch up as many OPM's as you can.

As Merchant republics no longer have a 20 province limit you can expand like you would any other nation into trading regions and make them trade companies. Assign a low dev province in the trade region to the Trading city as you are limited to one per region. You will want the entrepots and valuable trade goods for yourself

Also put trade cities in provinces you already encircled or otherwise make sure they can't expand, because if they get a second province they stop being a trading city and become a merchant republic instead.

So do i make trade cities out of OPM's like lübeck or bremen but encircle with my own land?

You want to make it in low dev places ideally Lubeck is good to hold. TC's give you 20% of their trade power so you want to maximise your own by holding the good land. The real benefit is the 2.5% extra ship trade steering per member.

Trade cities are completely new tags that you create from one province you own like client states with the exception being that trade cities cannot leave your league. OPM's like lubeck would join as a league member which are functionally like a TC but can leave.

So keep the important ports like lübeck and make trade cities out of the shitty forests and marshes?

Thats it.

In an ideal situation you want to own all of your home node.

Trading company in every other node with a Trading city surrounded by your own in some low dev province.

Then just snag every OPM in the world you can get into your trade league.

Is there a way to edit the amount of provinces so they don't turn into a merchant republic?

Worth to just vassalize or use trade city? In terms of single player efficiency?
All depends on how valuable the vassal is I suppose. if your gov cap is low. Vassalize and annex later. Trade cities are only one province so why not a mix of both. I would stick one in every node I can get if I'm trying to max it out.

In terms of worth i think it all depends on how you're playing and where. All this talk of Merchant republics got me to try a few games a Genoa. all the League members in the HRE and trade cities helped to greatly steer trade from the Wein node in HRE without having to take on the emperor or even hold any land there. I went reformed for the trade bonus and to hold Rome without issue and another benefit i didnt consider that was by making a lot of trade cities i was improving the level of defender of the faith by creating these new tags.

Where as if I were playing in the East as Hormouz or Kilwa for example I'd be controlling whole nodes to myself and likely just creating TC for flavour as its likely not worth it for nations like that. TC's are best when they are in heavily contested nodes where you will be trying squeeze every last bit of trade power out of your ships. E.g Europe or Malacca.

I made a trade city once and it somehow annexed another province and left my trade league, after that I decided it’s probably just best to own the land yourself

Another note- putting your Trade Cities in provinces with decent trade goods is a good idea. Since they're not you, the more power you have as a trade company or merchant republic, the higher their goods produced bonus becomes, which means you'll get more income if you stick them on ivory than if you stick them on grain, for example.

id like to agree with you if they dev'd and improved their province but they dont seem to do so. Much better in the players hands.
