I keep building light tanks and where I can use them to outflank and encircle the enemy more to make up for the slowly deteriorating ability to face them head on.

Then when I get medium tanks going, I convert them almost all to SPG and distributed amongst units as desired.

I usually don't bother with light tanks unless I'm Germany or the Soviets, since I'm probably playing a nation with a terrible tech and industrial base like Nationalist China. If I am playing Germany or USSR I'll usually use them until I get medium tanks, then convert them into either LTD3 or LSPG3 for use with motorized/mechanized infantry divisions. It's actually pretty useful being able to upgrade LT2 to LTD3 and LSPG3.

Neither. I just don't build tanks- it allows you to have your stockpiles ready for a war when you'll need them more, like against the Soviets. The French and the Low Countries stand no chance against the standard 7/2 divisions with AT support. - as Germany.

As anyone else.. it's the same really. Most of the Allies won't need them because you won't be launching a large invasion of Europe for a few years anyway.

Is it more IC efficient to have LSPA instead of MSPA? I guess it works, but the division armor's going down the drain...

Well motorized infantry at least doesn't have armor anyway, and with LSPA they'll be able to move faster than with MSPA. It also allows you to get a use out of all those LT2 you built earlier in the war.

I don't bother building anything but:
Infantry Weapons
Artillery
Support
Motorised
Fighters
Carrier Fighters & Carrier Naval Bombers if I'm building Carriers.

I spam 7/2 Infantry Divisions in the hundreds. I immediately convert all my starting army to infantry and exercise them until I've got enough Army XP to set up my armies.

By the time I've teched to Medium Tank 1942 I've usually got more than enough factories that I have a huge weapon stockpile so my next goal is to get about 50 factories on Medium Tanks and start building 4/6 or 5/5 Tank/Motorised.

If you get that then you're unstoppable because the AI is too stupid to do proper production.

That's basically what I usually do too! But with the new AI change in this patch, I feel like the lines are more static now (probably due to AI's building proper divisions like 14/4 inf-art)

So I'm considering something with a little more "punch", like heavy tank divisions...though sadly, that's just too damn expensive!!

So before you unlock medium tanks, do you build light tanks, heavy tanks or neither and just focus on artillery?

Share your strategies :)

Well, if you are Germany or the Soviets, you might work on getting your medium tanks before 1939. :p

But leaving that aside, I will sometimes build a few light tanks. Other than that, though I focus on other things. Plenty of need for ART and AT and infantry kits. Oh, and let's not forget about planes...

Of course, you can just go light tank and ignore the issue completely.

It depends on the game and strategy I am playing.
Make some, use them for early exploitation and overruns, then either convert them to Lt SPA and/or toss them into Motor Divisions to add breakthrough and use the Motor to race encirclements.

Don't make any, use the IC to make CAS and ART, and rush Medium Tanks.

A little in flux now with the SA nerf. It may be that having a bunch of Light Tanks will be needed now in 1.5 to break through French infantry in 1939. Racking and stacking arty isn't quite as effective as before.

Light tanks are not useless. They have the speed of motorised infantry so they work well together, similar can be said about medium and mechanized and Heavy with cavalry/infantry.

You can keep building light tanks and keep the efficiency after you researched medium which is a good way to keep a large armored arm early in the game. You can simply duplicate the starting tank template and replace the light tanks with medium which allow you to use both light and medium tanks.

Most of this only really applies to getting Germany ready for a 1939 war, but build as many light tanks as you can until you get 39 mediums, then switch over production. By September 39 you should have enough tanks for roughly 15-20 panzer divisions and you can gradually swap out light tanks for medium tanks one step at a time as you produce more. By doing this you will end up with a large stockpile of light tanks that you can convert to Lt SPG and reattach to your panzer divisions. 1936 Lt SPG are very cost effective when compared to 1939 Md SPG: They have similar combat stats, but with less armor and hardness. So you do end up reducing the hardness of your panzer divisions a bit, but it should only be temporarily until you get your Md SPG production up. Once you swap those out, you can reassign your surplus Lt SPGs to motorized divisions where they will greatly help their ability to hold encirclements without slowing them down.

Actually light tanks are great for sidewars, like Spain and China.
I keep producing Larm quit a time, as they do not consume precious Tungsten and later they can be converted to LSPG.
My armor divisions are mixed LARM&ARM, slowly rotating out LARM as amount of ARM gets bigger.

But yes, invest in air more than in armour.
