I do not see what is so micro intensive about organizing my oobs to use in layered attacks. I do not seem to have the problem you do with lag as i can split my units, reorganize, and delay attacks on the fly. Its not instant response in the GUI mind you, but an experienced player knows to count his clicks when using the GUIS in MP. Its not like the game requires lighting fast micro anyway.

When i am running down an army that has already been beaten in combat, to destroy it, i use a chasing army of cav. Followed by an army consisting of arty and inf. I do not worry about battle phases there because the chasee usually has a 1/3 to 1/5th of its original morale.

When i am trying to intercept a fresh opposing army i almost do the same...

I do not just smash all my units into a province into one big glorious battle, phase by phase, as you suggest. I will engage the enemy and keep them there with expendable units who will take somewhat of a beating and withdraw from the battle just as my inf and arty are to arrive. Its not very hard to do as you have a large window of time before the enemy army can withdraw from the province. I have never had lag get in the way of the timing because you have a window of at least 1 min before your prey escapes. Your troops earmarked to hold the enemy there wear them down in a 3/4 battle then retreat leaving the opposition to face a fresh inf/art army through ALL PHASES OF COMBAT, that arrives well after the first battle took place, but way before the opposing army can recover from the first battle.

You seem to assume people all play or think the way you do.

I use my units the same for SP or MP. Admittedly SP is a mindless breeze as the game is old and runs very smoothly on a modern machine even on the fastest settings.

MP i don't know, maybe i play with a group that has better connections or less players, lag is present, but not enought o make the game unmanageable at times, for me at least.

Should be polite and answer the original posters question!

During peace time i closely follow events as they unfold around me, wether it be in my own back yard or as far as my maps allow at the time. I always look for something to turn to my advantage if possible. I usually try to have a game plan from the get go/ or goal with a way to achieve it in mind. I monitor my trade when it becomes worthwhile to do so(Trd LVL) and i spend a lot of time trying to forge alliances or protecting my self diplomatically. Make sure future enemies do not grow to strong

Sometimes, when things get slow i will crack a book or magazine with an article from the time period just to reinvigorate my resolve!

The most important thing to do for any player during the slow time should be obvious. Walk around the house a bit, and pretend to be attentive to your significant others needs, initiate some small talk, but not too much as to keep you from the duties of running your empire! A true leader squashes the most dangerous of situations with keen foresight and a bit of arse kissing!

Marshall, looks like your original thread idea got twisted all sorts of ways, which sometimes happens around here, but not too often. There are several great threads about trade which can help you if you really wish to get into that area. Some of the more famous (and now mostly silent) posters of years gone past were really into maths and could nail a discussion about how much a certain trader cost at a certain CoT and so forth. I just never worried about it and as the others implied, even with that somewhat lazy thought process, I still dominated trade by the 1700s.

About investing, most of the people that I learned from back in the day demanded a single focus concept and that by doing so, you would race ahead over time of your enemy. Yes, you must pay attention to your neighbors and as you see (if you see) them climbing ahead of you in a crucial tech (land or naval, depending on your nation), then you turn your focus to that area in order to catch up. But those of us who hammer out infra 5 and Trade 5 usually feel that we dominate in the military techs by the early 1600s, if not sooner.

War I won't touch primarily because no human should ever get beaten in a war with the AI. And to win, you don't even have to fight battles (hence less worries about land techs). This is NOT true in MP, keep in mind.

So, to your original question---you prepare for the future. You oversee your diplomatic relationships, you make sure your military is at full capacity to your allowable build, you make sure your plans for province build is where you can be (hate to find that lone province with no TC), and you plan. As you get more comfortable, you also set the speed to a lot faster, especially if you know you are planning on a decade of peace to let the badboy drop or in order to raise funds for a manufactory and such.

As Austria, you have so many issues to deal with and things to plan for (do you focus on Germany or Italy, France as your enemy or the Ottomans as your enemy, etc....) that boredom isn't really an issue.
