Before you load a save game or scenario, you'd see countries labelled in stars at Military, Economy, and Diplomacy. How are those really calculated?

It'd be nice, though, there are more stars than 5... since I usually get 5 on military even though my army's pitiful compared to others with 5 stars in military.

Those stars are not the ratings of your country by those of your head of state (either Monarch or otherwise) and they are not calculated but are fixed at "birth".

I am not referring to the stars of the monarchs, but rather the stars when you load up the world map of the save game or scenario. i.e. France and Spain/Castile is almost always 5 stars.

In addition, the stars give you the diplomatic, administrative and military values of the rulers, but they are 3+the number of stars. That is, a 0 star rating is a 3 in game, and a 5 star rating is an 8 in game.

They should match those displayed in game.

They are definitely tied to in-game success, however the formula baffles me. To provide a very simple example, in my current Cherokee game, the king has Mil 7, Dip 9, Adm 3. On the lobby, I have a 5 star military and economic rating, and a 0 star diplomacy rating.

The stars definitely are intended to reflect on your strength and position, however they aren't very reliable (in particular I feel the economic line is very inconsistent - I can be no.1 on income and have a 1 star economy there).

Come on guys... you are experienced players.

The stars at the loading screen are not the same stars as your monarch's stats. For one good example, just look at George III's stats at American Revolutionary War time stamp and compare to GBR's ratings. You would be seeing 5 star countries in the most hopeless of countries at certain time stamps if they are a direct measure of ruler competence.

Now, can someone tell me how those stars are measured (no, I am not talking about the stars for ruler stats). i.e. I am asking how GBR and France got those 5 stars and how TGH got those mediocre stars.

Yeah that's what I am talking about. I sometimes get low ratings for economy despite an extremely high income.

As far as I know, the countries are ranked somehow, and then the top countries get 5 stars, then follow the 4 star countries etc.

E.g. if you remove all countries except one from Earth, it will always have excellent ratings, no matter how pitiful they really are. (that's because they're no. 1 in the world in everything) If you remove all countries but 2, they will both still have excellent ratings, even if they're quite different in reality.

How the ranking works I don't know; it probably differs per stat (military, economy, diplomacy). I've noticed that the economy stat has a lot to do with the amount of buildings you have.

Those stars show your strenght.
Economic, depend on :
Number of Provinces. If you got small number of wealthy provinces, you are more likely to get more stars. But for more than 3 you need a COT. If you have big number of poor provinces if you have no COT, you may get 1-2 stars, if you got COT you will have at least 3. It counts not only your monthly income but also yearly.
Do you or don't you have any COT (if you don't it is max 3 stars - unless some special cirtumstances, if you got COT it is at least 3 stars, and ussualy 4-5)
Technology - if you lack in tech it is lower i think, if you're tech leader it is likely to be extremly high. That is why new world nations and african ones, ussualy get max 2 even with COT.
Tech group - i think but not sure about it. But it is tied with tech, so maybe that also count.
Buildings.
Military depends on:
Your current army
Other countries armies
Your land tech - if it is drasticaly low you will have it low anyway. Whatever incas can't ussualy get armies bigger than 30k...
Your army limit - most countries that are big but lost all their armies got it at least 3... ussualy. And if you are small but got quite big army, you ussualy get 3-4 stars, even if you got biggest or one of biggest armies. I think it has to do with manpower...
Also it depend on that, are you or not, at war.
Diplomatic depends:
On your prestige
On your current aliances
On your army/economy and your enemies strength
Relations with other nation i think
On techgroup, and gov tech i think.

The Star rating seems only accurate for the Military (which is probably based on # of troops/boats ... so pretty straight forward).

Diplomatic seems to be vassals and alliances and relations with others, possibly infamy ... does not seem obvious in how it evaluates.

Economic rating seems broken... it seems as if you have a CoT, you automatically get 5 stars, and if you do not have a CoT but are nonetheless one of the world leaders in income, you may only have 3-4 stars.

If you got no COT, you got 0-3 stars, if you got COT, you got 3-5 stars.
But i have to say that having a cot means your economy is more stable as no one can embargo you, so that is good IMHO.

Diplomacy i think depend on many things, like stability, enemies, allies, number of provinces, and some factors i don't realy know. Someone could reasarch it.

Military is one of the most important, but your army does not need to be better, your army limit also counts - swa lithunia having 5 start and me as moscow got 4, but i got higher army (i got 40, they got 30). But i suppose they got more army limit...

My impression is that they are not quite relative in terms of scoring. If someone can point me to the file with the script, I'd probably mod it to scale with the top and bottom power in each category and perhaps make each star a 20% percentile or 20% raw quantity (and perhaps in log space...).
