What do do when a dynasty member has a claim on an Empire

i started as harold in 1066.after a load of years i have a dynasty member have a claim on the byz empire.if i win he is the byz emperor.this means a huge war to get him this position.thats good for him but not really for me.or is it ?anyone know what the best way to deal with this as i can never get the person im playing as to have claims on empires.

Over the long-term It will be good for your prestige. You will also enjoy improved relations with the emperor. You could also engineer a long play to inherit the empire with a regular marriage. Have a single female heir, marry her to emperor, and her child will be born in the purple.

If you changed to seniority succession, eventually the emperor will inherit all your titles. Personally I would just risk inbreeding and try to gain it through marriage, which should be considerably easier given you're both the same dynasty.

Yes but can your family hold the Byzantine Empire ? They are surely Catholic and Anglo-Saxon, so they will have a heavy opinion penalty against their imperial vassals. And since you are far away from them, you would probably not be able to help the empire if the vassals revolt (unless you hold the kingdom of Jerusalem or have a foothold in Italy/Balkans, in which case you can park some troops there - like your retinues - just in case)

I usually press it but in this case it would probably be a waste. Your family member will fold to a faction for elective or a Greek with a claim. They probably won't even offer a fight as the ai doesn't care that it has allies when it comes to factions.

If your dynasty member is still a child you could try to educate him to make him orthodox and/or greek. He'll have a decent chance if he's at least one or the other.

Although you may get a claim passed down to a decedent that you could take advantage of later. If I can handle the opportunity cost, I like to press family claims even if the family member will likely lose the post. You are still potentially creating good situations for yourself in the future, generating family prestige, and there's an off-chance the new emperor will stick. If you have nothing else going on, you don't have much to lose.
