I have (and am satisfied with) everything except Sunset Invasion and the Russian stuff. The music ones are some of my favourites: they're IMO a better buy than most commercial music on the market.
What DLC is worth buying and what is not?

You don't like the Russian music? It's my 2nd favorite, right behind the Byzantine music set.
The really big ones are LoR and SoI... though I'll personally recommend the Muslim and Byzantine music packs, as those are both absolutely fantastic.
After that, its totally up to you. I was only short the Ruler Designer and Songs of Faith DLCs... and for less than two bucks, I've changed that.
I'm also pretty big on the African facepack, all the Russian stuff, and the Songs of Albion (which I've edited to be heard by Celtic cultures as well). However, the Russian stuff isn't part of the sale.
After that, its totally up to you. I was only short the Ruler Designer and Songs of Faith DLCs... and for less than two bucks, I've changed that.

I agree, the Russian music is pretty fantastic. Though I'll have to say its third behind Songs of the Caliph, which I personally think is the best.
Sword of Islam is epic, i dont play muslism a lot but its definately worth the money for completely diffrent experience. LoR is also worth it, it doesnt really do much but it has a low price for retinues and some nice Byzantine Events.
I got Sunset Invasion but yet to use it in a game. But i think i will in my next Godwin game, but this is the one you probably can give a miss.
As for the minor cosmetic DLC's; music, unitpacks, facepacks and CoA i was not really convinced about them, until i picked up some on Steam Sale. After realising how much better they make this game i now own them all, and will continue to buy it. As others said the Music DLC's are brilliant and so are the CoA's (however i would like some of them to look a bit better)

Yeah, but I still think they look 10x more realistic than the vanilla western portraits.
I'd happily pay for more portrait DLCs to bring the other ethnicities in line with the Russian portraits, and soon to be Republic portraits, because as it is, it's actually taking out immersion switching from a realistic looking Russian character to a cartoony English character... :glare:
Legacy of rome and Sword of islam, the rest is just flavour, the two however add a lot of new game mechanics into the game.
Does Sword of Islam really add that many new mechanics? As far as I can see, unless you are going to play as a Muslim ruler, which to me is too annoying since the Arab portraits make everyone look far too similar, then all it adds is a commander trait system.
True, but playing an Islamic ruler is a lot of fun, even so they look somewhat similar.
Indeed, I play modded games, but the Arabs still look far too similar, it's a pain keeping track of who's who.
It's subjective, really. The music ones garner high praise and, besides, you can put .ogg files on your phone or something like that just to listen to them outside the game. Portraits and unit packs make the game more interesting. Shields aren't bad, although in some cases I like the previous ones more. Sword of Islam only if you intend to play as a Muslim, which I don't, so I don't buy it. Not sure about which features from Legacy of Rome are available without the DLC (i.e. in the accompanying free patch) but I got LoR anyway. I'm getting the Republic DLC the moment it shows up.

I wish the Ruler Designer had been included in the base game, as it seems like it should have been baseline functionality, but designing your own custom ruler really helps you feel a sense of pride over your dynasty. It also lets you customize their traits to give you a boost in the early game.
I'm staying away from Sunset Invasion, but probaby will pick up the Republic if it gets good reviews and is priced reasonably.

Furthermore, Paradox made the commander traits available even to players without Sword of Islam. You only really need the DLC if you want to play as a Muslim, or if you want to encourage Paradox to release more expansions like Sword of Islam and fewer like Legacy of Rome, which only made its most important features available to those who paid.
