With an invasion, you keep all the land you conquer. Excommunication wars simply depose the current ruler in favour of his/her heir, who gets a -200 prestige hit.

Invasion is what William and Harald are using against Harold of England in the Stamford Bridge start. You don't need a claim, instead you need to get the Pope to approve it.

Excommunication can also be used to conveniently take care of ambitious vassals since you can execute imprisoned excommunicated characters without penalty. Ask the pope to excommunicate one of your vassals, imprison them and then execute and allow their (more loyal) heir to take over. As an added bonus, if they rebel while you're trying to imprison them, you can revoke one of their titles if need be after beating them and then execute them. The heir's opinion is unaffected even though you just lopped of his daddy's head and stole one of his titles.

This requires good relations with the Pope, the target to have poor relations, and costs a hefty amount of piety.

When it came down to it, I valued piety too much to use it up and went with other expansionist choices. But it may be worth it for getting rid of that unwanted relation without a lot of opinion hits.
