Yesterday I enjoyed lending out condottieri for free to Albania and helping them defeat the Ottomans in their first war (they took four provinces from them). Too bad a couple decades later the Ottomans declared again and my free condottieri weren't enough this time so poor Albania got full annexed :(

I finished the Venetian Sea achievement last weekend. Definitely not the hardest achievement I have done, but it was one that I couldn't do a year or two ago. Finally finishing it felt very good :)

I am playing a Castille walkthough, it has been quite tough to fight off the brits from America and basically impossible to do a naval invasion... so I am just focusing on continental Europe

I screwed up by supporting Manchu against Ming and now they are mega-strong and Emperors of China, so I have just abandoned my Chinese ambitions (just stopped in Filipines)

To be honest it has been superfun but playing as Spain is very stressful because you have a very high historical bar!

Sounds fun! I've been thinking about a Spanish save for a while as I've never done one but I worry that it might be too easy to be enjoyable. Which difficulty are you playing on?

I would say it is "easy". I picked up the game after years of not playing and I have had a relatively comfortable playthrough, the thing is that you have to rush many thing and not screw up in the beginning to beat Portugal to colonise and other stuff, otherwise end up a bit behind...

Have to say I loved it but will try something within the HRE next time!

My current (second) game as Austria is hugely enjoyable. I've listed the highlights below (so far !) - the year is 1590ish
  1. Every time I declare a war, two or three princes sneakily declare their own - Keeping the peace is like herding cats ! It's fun playing war-of-liberation whack-a-mole.
  2. Splatting the centres of reformation is very enjoyable; Protestantism never stood a chance as their only centre appeared in Naples.
  3. The Protestant League therefore never formed - Reformation ? No ! Forwards, into the past !
  4. Poland, Lithuania, Danzig, Teutonic Order - all in the HRE. Gives the Baltic a different flavour, having everyone on the same side fighting the Scandinavians.
  5. Burgundy didn't explode, nor were they inherited; at some point I'm going to have to deal with them (they've eaten a lot of France and can put 100k in the field) as a mini boss.
  6. Spain have a Habsburg on the throne :D
  7. I'm a couple of years away from declaring the Ewiger Landfriede - I'm then going for Voltaire's Nightmare.
  8. Once that's done, I'm going to get the Imperal Vassal Swarm and invade the Ottoman Balkans - surely they will run out of manpower faced by all of central, eastern, and most of western Europe ? - and release every little country I can to expand the Empire.
Credit the developers for the Imperial game - it's a lot of fun, there's a lot to do to keep the HRE running smoothly, you're nearly constantly in some small skirmish over something, and the various events and so on keep refreshing relationships and so on. The sudden declaration of several small wars whenever the Imperial back is turned is very fun - gives me a reason stick to objectives, as now I need to get home & smack der kinder on the nose for laying siege to Lubeck again !

AI Byzantium beat Ottomans.
I have tried to teach a friend EUIV by having him play the Ottomans. He somehow lost to Byzantium and all of his European lands.

I played an Austria campaign to get the Holiest Roman Empire achievement. That was fairly straightforward, but I had my eye on a second achievement in this run, one that previously eluded me. I conquered Corfu from the Ottomans, released them as a vassal, and over the next few several decades began feeding them provinces until Corfu had roughly the borders of modern Greece + Constantinople.

I diploannexed Corfu and began the work of destroying the Austrian empire I had built. I cancelled my personal unions over Bohemia and Poland. Hungary, Transylvania, and Burgundy reappeared on the map after returning their cores to them. I disbanded all my armies and fleets. I demolished all my forts. I cancelled my good idea sets like defensive, offensive and influence and chose less useful ones like espionage, exploration and aristocratic. My work complete, it was time to release Corfu as a vassal and play as them.

In spite of doing my best to wreck Austria's strength before switching over, they remained surprisingly strong--I had a bunch of provinces in France and the low countries where it was not possible to return to any tag and no surrounding countries wanted them, not even for the price of free. As Corfu I built my armies, bided my time and waited to declare my independence with Spain's support. Long story short, it was a difficult war and could have gone the other way. I marched my army to Vienna which fell remarkably easily after an artillery barrage. But the Austrians could have easily sent over a doom stack to wipe me out and take back their capital but luckily they were distracted elsewhere.

In the peace treaty I chose my only terms: Austria must revoke five core provinces. I watched their reasons to decline tick down month after month: -3, -2, -1, 0... Green check mark. The interface warned me in red text I would still remain Austria's subject. Who cares, mission accomplished. Achievement unlocked: Core-fu.

France has a mission to support independence of a colony and it grants you an early version of Imperialism if I understand it correctly. Colonies tend to be super loyal so I didn't expect to do it until the Revolution, but... Thirteen Colonies, Newfoundland and English Brazil banded together and asked me to support it.

Seeing half of the New World just become independent was great... only sad Thirteen Colonies decided to form Florida...

Started my first Timurids game last night.

I'm away with an old laptop, so thought I'd fool around with something I'm normally not interested in.

Woah!

Allied AQ, Otto, and Jaunpur, and just brutalized everyone. The only tough fight was Otto dowing Mamluks and calling me in. I decided to humiliate/show of strength QQ at the same time cause with so much coring, I was falling behind in techs.

Mamluks were nasty business, and pushing Otto around. We needed 2-1 numbers to push them back.

Plus, AQ had dow'd QQ(another reason I chose to sos them), then peaced out and joined Otto vs Mamluks. So I was sieging down QQ, and mamluks would run up and poke me in the back.

But Otto did the heavy lifting (I got 2 gold in the peace deal) and soon after Mamluks dropped me as a rival.

I made transo a march early on, I think I'll keep them for a bit.

Think its around 1480? Ming just rivaled me, and I'm up 100 dev on Otto, so I'm doing okay. I never play east of Mamluks, so I'm happy with my progress.

I need just Delhi now to form Mughals. But god the whole world could form a mega coalition. I've hit every region, culture, and religion. I take a pee and 30 names pop up as possibly forming a coalition.

I haven't taken an idea group yet. Just got 5 before ending for the night. I guess most would go admin to stack with Mughals, but I'll keep Timmie's ideas and probably take quantity. No wc planned. Just india.

Its a really fun, whirlwind start.

I tried cooling off, to tech up, but so many opportunities keep coming up - like 2 province Ajam allied Otto, but then allied Uzbek! I actually missed a window to take Sindh when they only had a delhi guarantee (Jaunpur keeps allying my eastward targets - after delhi I'll drop them).

So I think first thing tonight I'll try to pick up an indian big, then hit delhi and only call in jaunpur after i have the province of delhi (I have ... lahore? so not a long march).

Then do some tech catch up.
