I have found that improving relations with members of a coalition will have them leave it at some point between wars.
What did I do to deserve this?!

I hope you lose your country to Aztecs after accidentally disbanding your army while getting carpet sieged. I hope you accidentally kick your 100 tradition general and get the "Rifle vs bow" event three times in a row. I hope you lose 100 heavy ships after accidentally sending them to Antarctica and forgetting about them for 100 years... You deserve it all for expanding.
