  • Europa Universalis III: Chronicles
So I'm playing a game as Minamoto trying to unite Japan. Trying to marry and inherit everybody. Already inherited Fujiwara and I'm in a PU with Taira.

I noticed that if we hover with the mouse over the monarch name it will tell me what will happen on monarch death. It told me I would inherit Fujiwara and so I did.
But now it's just telling me the PU with Taira will continue. Which is really strange because I have:

200 relation;
100 prestige;
100 legitimacy;
100 Shogun Influence;
0.0 Infamy;
At peace.

The situation is quite literally perfect. WTH? What's stopping me from inheriting them?

Integration is different from inheritance. The whole point of inheritance is that you get cores on all of their provinces (provided they're of the same culture group). You don't get those cores if you force-integrate.

Inheritance laws seem to be a mystery in EU3. I think here is how it works
Target country: After Monarch's death, let's say it says that a noble from your house will succeed to the throne. Then, the Monarch produces a heir. Then the heir dies. Then if the Monarch dies, you might inherit.

So, I think it might have something to do with producing a succession of heirs with weak claims. Or, if the target monarch has a weak legitimacy and he produces a weak heir who dies, you might inherit the throne.

I remember a game as Castille, when I tried to peacefully annex Aragon by Royal Marriage. Throughout 1460 to 1490, I kept waiting for the king to die and for me to inherit and thus form Spain. Months before the king died, he produced an heir, and the Regency Council went on to irritate me before I got sick of it all and invaded the country. I eventually formed Spain in 1571

You do lose buildings, though. I much prefer to ninja-spy cores all over Japan to keep buildings.

I guess your monarch needs to live longer than theirs for automatic PU or inheritance, something like:
Note: Your monarch, I'll call him 'A' of 'X' nation, RM with 'Y' nation when 'B' is on the throne, and 'C' is B's successor.
1) If B has no successor, A may get PU or inherit Y while competing with Y's nobles and other RM nations.
2) When B dies when there's C, A gets a chance to PU or inherit Y, as shown on the screen while competing with other RM nations but NOT nobles, when C dies without a further successor.
3) If B dies when there's C and you are lucky and see PU or inheriting the nation when C dies from the leader screen, it'll be cancelled if your Monarch A dies before C dies.

Other factors (legitimacy, prestige, maybe BB, diplomatic skill, etc) will affect the chance of auto PU or inheritance, but I'm sure these three applies to auto PU/inheritance:
1) No further heirs
2) Have a RM
3) The more your monarch outlast the other monarchs, the higher the chance. (Being the great-great uncle of the current monarch certainty gives a lot of legitimacy)

This thing appears to be completely random lol.

The diplomatic skill of my leader isn't stellar but when I forced the PU, it said I'd inherit (at a relations of 12!). Then it said the PU would continue. Now it says I'll inherit again. WTH.

I guess your monarch needs to live longer than theirs for automatic PU or inheritance,

I claimed their throne and forced a Personal Union. That means their monarch is my monarch.

That line in the monarch screen actually has nothing to do with whether or not its going to happen (it might be the most likely scenario on there, but its not definite) as its recalculated when your monarch actually dies.

This always kind of bugged me. One time the message that the union was passed to the new ruler popped up while I was actually looking at the monarch screen that said I'd inherit. Oh well.

Wow. Its very rare to see something like this from the paradoxian- Usually you get a pretty clear definition of whatever your looking for.

Heres the directs quote about inheritance

Inheriting

If your relations with your partner are high enough and your prestige is positive, you have a certain chance to inherit them every time a new ruler takes the throne. Inheriting a small nation appears to be more likely than inheriting a large nation. Also, it seems you cannot inherit during a war. Unfortunately, the mechanics behind inheritance and which factors influence the inheritance chance are not very well understood by the community.

To increase the number of chances you get to inherit your partner nation, you can consider switching to a Noble Republic. This government type has an elected king that changes every 8 years, giving a lot more opportunities to inherit than ordinary monarchies do. "

http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Personal_union

So in short all that can be gathered for this is

-High prestige/high relations
-Have the partner be a small country
-Get noble republic so you have the chance every 8 years (you still have a king here apparently)

Well, I just inherited both Taira and Tachibana, and finally formed Japan.

I kept relations at 200 with gift spam and hired ninjas to get the +15 prestige event, while maintaining a philosopher (and some gardens). At the time it did say I'd inherit them.

One thing I noticed is that it is worth it to exclude your PU partner from your alliance, since every time it enters a war it changes *something* on the Union, making it continue in stead of inherit. and since PU partners have the incredibly annoying habit of joining all of your wars ...

Just to make this clear: you cannot have PUs as a Noble Republic. It's a republic -- you cannot switch to a republic if you still have ongoing PUs.

What many people don't know is how trust works with a personal union. If they have a high trust level with you, they won't spam insults even if they are way stronger ( poland-lithuania) and you have a greater chance to inherit.
