That may seem to you, but I don't think they had much choice. Russia was their best bet, since alone they wouldn't make it.
Well, maybe they shouldn't have started their movement by killing Armenian loyalists and servants of the Ottomans. Their service of Armenia might have been in doubt at that point.
And then, seeing as though the Ottoman Empire collapsed, don't you think they would have had a chance to exist? No, they instead welcomed new conquerors--Christian conquerors, albeit under atheist flags. Again, it seems Armenia had been forgotten in simple hatred.
There seemed an eagerness to escape the infidel Muslims and live in a Christian society--their own or another. It wasn't about nationalism as we know it, though modern day nationalists have projected politics into centuries past. It would be like the Irish siding and then uniting with the French.
Sorry, maybe I just misunderstood "Death to the Turks." I should have taken it to mean "only in the light of history would I wish to see the Turks killed, but it would just be self-defense."
All I know is that when the Armenians had Russian soldiers behind them, they seemed real happy to fight the Turks. Then, when Russia collapsed from within and took its soldiers away, all that beautiful, noble spirit to be free and self-determining collapsed as well. No diplomatic venues were pursued, no widespread movement of Armenians was seen. It seemed to be simply opportunistic bloodshed. Insurrection on par with the Bolsheviks, a minority making claims for everyone.
Maybe it was supposed to be a joke, and maybe none of you are aware of this, but some innocent Turks died in that war and many others, yet despite that, I would
never write "Death to the Armenians."
Completely aside from my greatly incomplete grasp on history, I guess that's what I was really about. Sorry.
